Seagate has recently its solid-state drive (SSD) offerings with the introduction of the BarraCuda 530. Positioned as an advancement over its predecessor, the BarraCuda 520, this M.2 2280 SSD operates on the PCIe 4.0 interface. Despite maintaining the same PCIe 4.0 x4 interface as the BarraCuda 520, the new BarraCuda 530 transitions to the NVMe 2.0 protocol from the previous NVMe 1.4, indicating a notable enhancement in performance. Preliminary information suggests the BarraCuda 530 might employ a Phison PCIe 4.0 controller and utilize 3D TLC NAND technology, although specific component models remain undisclosed. The SSD is available in capacities of 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, with expectations of a future extension to 4TB, mirroring the capacity range offered by the BarraCuda 520.

Performance metrics reveal significant improvements in the BarraCuda 530 series, with the 2TB model achieving sequential read and write speeds up to 7,400 MB/s and 6,400 MB/s, respectively. These figures represent a 48% increase in sequential read speed and a 52% increase in sequential write speed compared to the BarraCuda 520. The endurance ratings of the BarraCuda 530 series have also seen substantial enhancements. The 2TB variant is rated for 1,200 terabytes written (TBW), while the 1TB and 512GB models are rated for 600 TBW and 300 TBW, respectively. This represents a significant improvement, with the 2TB and 1TB models offering more than double the endurance, and the 512GB model providing 1.5 times the endurance of their respective predecessors.

Power consumption metrics indicate minimal changes, with the average idle power draw remaining at 50 mW across both the new and previous series. The average active power consumption varies slightly by capacity, with the 2TB BarraCuda 530 model matching the power draw of its predecessor, while the 1TB and 512GB models exhibit a 4% and 6% increase, respectively. Seagate backs the BarraCuda 530 with a limited five-year warranty. Official pricing and a formal announcement of the new SSD series are pending, but the product's listing suggests an imminent release.
