MP3 Encoding
Something I did not exactly expect was the Athlon 64 4000+ system to be faster during encoding sessions. We took a little program called dBpowerAMP and convert a 58 MB .wav file towards a 192kbs MP3 (Lame) file at 44100 in Stereo. For the freaks, this was the London Symphony Orchestra - Prokofiev - Romeo & Juliet, Introduction, Montagues and Capulets.
Eek .. I need to look out for conversion software that can handle multi-threading. Still top notch performance though.
DVD to DiVX Conversion
In this test we convert a scene from a DVD (Lord of the Rings in this case) towards DiVX 6 with the help of a little tool called XMPEG. It's the easiest trick in the book to measure performance in a reliable way. There's is a tolerance of ~2% though, but you'll get the idea.
And guess what ?
XMPEG loves dual-core technology for sure. Don't get confused, FPS in this test means the number of converted frames per second. So the AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 can crunch 80 image frames each second.
