Actually I had to restart explorer yesterday to get my volume control icon back again

I have definitely restarted my PC more than twice since installing the Windows updates on Wednesday evening as I use my PC in the morning for an hour before I go to work and shut it down then turn it on again in the evening before shutting it down when I go to bed.

Does fast boot count though ? Maybe its full reboot that does it

Remedy = Upgrade to Windows 7

They rush, clearly rush it. Windows 8 was really solid, stable and fast. The only complaint was "Hey where'z my damn start menu?!".. but now Microsoft community is full of rage topics. I know, no OS is perfect but read this news again, it's completely unacceptable. I'd keep Windows 8 until Threshold as it is still supported by Microsoft.

Guess they haven't had the time to pull them yet... you can hide the update(s) from WU to prevent it from prompting for them permanently (they can be re-enabled too if necessary).
Yea just makes me wonder if it is as bad / widespread as people are making out, usually they pull bad updates immediately if it affects a lot of people The BitLocker WP8.1 update was pulled 20 mins after being made live

Guys, write your own OS. What is the problem?

I didn't have any issue with my laptop and desktop. Both very different chipsets and hardware.

I didn't have any issue.
Full reboot at least 3 times since the update ? (Not shutdown, actual reboot)

Still no issues. It works just like every other update for me. I suppose the update doesn't work quite well with certain hardware setups. Heard this fixes it by the way, it has something to do with system font cache; Remove this file with a Windows Repair Disk or whatever -> c:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT SOURCE URL: http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/users-find-fix-botched-kb-2982791-and-kb-2970228-windows-update-248476 Then your system should be up and running again.

4 of my systems updated to the latest. Everything works fine. Pretty lucky I guess.

This should be stickied if true, and from the article it looks like a good few people say it does

has anyone noticed how you cant even do safe mode unless you was already booted into windows and tell it to reboot to safe mode correct me if im wrong on this but there is no way i know of to get into safe mode without already being in windows with windows 8.1 major mistake by Microsoft if they want a better trouble shoot experience would be nice to have the old f8 way back to me its all a big http://forums.guru3d.com/images/smilies/banana2.gif over to us all if you ask me so many things to still fix

You can but its a PITA, fastest way is to reset the machine while windows is loading a few times so it thinks its a failed boot Used to be able to edit the BCD to add the legacy boot options but they blocked that with Update 1 it seems, at least it doesn't work for me any more EDIT -- This was the best method that doesn't seem to work now --- Enable Windows 8 safemode menu F8 Command Prompt: Enable: bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy Disable: bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard

I agree that removing the F8 period is dumb, but there are other ways, they just suck. If you have a boot disk/usb you can get it in safe mode. And if the bootloader detects it's not fully booting it will boot into safe mode automatically.

Well, I uninstalled those two updates though so far no issues.

And what gain do they have to rush? What are they in so much of a time crunch for that they can't test when a "patch" renders your system unbootable? They release stuff on a monthly basis and this was just a security update so it could have waited (especially considering security updates seem to accomplish very little). Seriously, linux gets less issues like this and a decent chunk of the contributors aren't even paid. MS is serving millions of people - they seriously need to put more regulations toward their test-release process. I might be safe for now. I didn't boot into Windows on Tuesday, I don't recall any updates being installed on Wednesday. Updates did install yesterday (12 of them), so I'll ensure I uninstall this thing tonight.

Must have been one of the lucky ones, mine went smoothly during the update and have been running it for the past days without issues.
