Personally I hate those outdated directshow splitters and codecs with passion and refuse to install those. UtVideo codec is exception because I happen to need it and DxTory needs VfW codecs.
DS isn't going anywhere unless m$ plans to deprecate it which probably won't happen for a long time. Anyway, MF isn't going to be adopted unless there's a decent MF media player and right now there's none and afaik nobody has even bothered to write one.
UI wise I quite like WMP becuase I mainly listen to music anyway and when it comes to music VLC and MPC-HC are utter crap because they aren't really meant as music players. If I want to jsut watch a video, WMP works just fine.

Ah ok. I use MPC-HC but it would've been nice to have support for all common formats and containers baked in.

Yes, but only with extra codecs that needed to be downloaded. I am more happy for the fact that they are supporting HEVC/H.265 MKV files.

Sorry but Xbox Video doesn't make use of my tablet's video decoding hardware and as a result the colour quality looks awful. MPC-HC is set as my default player for video related content and Windows Media Player is my default for music.

For some reason some of my video camera that is in .MPG format don't play on Windows 8.1 even with codecs installed. Don't have this problem with Windows 7
