It's just Xbox Video or OS-wide like Windows 10?

Been using mkv for a long time - what's new?

Hmm, I seem to have killed Metro apps by signing in as the Administrator account, and deleting my old profile/account Metro apps don't work with elevated Admin accounts apparently.... strange

Not sure what you mean. I can watch my blu-ray rips through the default video player now rather than watching it through what I was previously using. This is good news becuase I can now spend that $69.99 I was going to use on an upgrade next week on something else. 😀

I mean whether WMP will also be able to play MKVs or is this limited to just the Video app?

Oh. I'm not sure about that. I would assume WMP would have the support as well.

Just Xbox Video gained the update for MKV and this was an app update.

That's nice. I guess. Though I'm not sure why I'd want to play mkv files through a cumbersome and restrictive app if I can play it through several other readily available means.

XBox video only... for OS wide you still have VLC or the MKV codec... btw unoficial patch can run XBox video's video from website on VLC... wich is almost the same as this app but can run even on XP or se7en.

it's like iTune or any online shop/player nothing more, nothing less it is still one of the major actor of VOD worldwide, so it's nice to see it evolve in the good way. MKV is one of the best content file format

Ah ok. I use MPC-HC but it would've been nice to have support for all common formats and containers baked in.

Good choice! MPC-HC is jointly coded by someone you may have seen on here... 😉

I've recently switched to mkv container for my videos mainly because I can use flac with it. It does help when uploading to youtube since that way the audio doesn't get butchered twice. It's great that W10 will have proper support for flac and mkv in media player too which means proper media foundation splitters and codecs. Good bye for legacy directshow ****.

Just like with the flac support, better late than never. But boy, are they late.

DS isn't going anywhere unless m$ plans to deprecate it which probably won't happen for a long time. Anyway, MF isn't going to be adopted unless there's a decent MF media player and right now there's none and afaik nobody has even bothered to write one.

https://github.com/secondstory/ofxWMFVideoPlayer I've no idea what it's like tho, never used it. EDIT: Ah, I've just checked the code, it's basically a very simple player with no frills. Might be a decent starting point if someone fancies a project to fork tho...

Back roughly 6 years ago when I still used Windows for media purposes, I installed codec packs for Media Player. Pretty easy way to avoid VLC, if you for some reason need to.
