Much needed.

It's just Xbox Video or OS-wide like Windows 10?

Been using mkv for a long time - what's new?

Hmm, I seem to have killed Metro apps by signing in as the Administrator account, and deleting my old profile/account
Metro apps don't work with elevated Admin accounts apparently.... strange

Just Xbox Video gained the update for MKV and this was an app update.

That's nice. I guess. Though I'm not sure why I'd want to play mkv files through a cumbersome and restrictive app if I can play it through several other readily available means.

I've recently switched to mkv container for my videos mainly because I can use flac with it. It does help when uploading to youtube since that way the audio doesn't get butchered twice.
It's great that W10 will have proper support for flac and mkv in media player too which means proper media foundation splitters and codecs. Good bye for legacy directshow ****.

Just like with the flac support, better late than never. But boy, are they late.

I've no idea what it's like tho, never used it.
EDIT: Ah, I've just checked the code, it's basically a very simple player with no frills. Might be a decent starting point if someone fancies a project to fork tho...

Back roughly 6 years ago when I still used Windows for media purposes, I installed codec packs for Media Player. Pretty easy way to avoid VLC, if you for some reason need to.
