Technology worked around our existing business model => we are changing our existing business model to close that annoying loophole. (in the tone of yer man from Falling Down - "fuck you, fuck you very much")

MS Server 2019 is also lisenced per core. https://www.microsoft.com/fi-fi/cloud-platform/windows-server-pricing Some products are priced per socket and some are per user. The price you pay in the end is what matters, not how it's calculated. Customers are looking how they can get something as cheap as possible and companies exist because those make profit so that's what they want to do. I think I would buy that explanation.
it's not the same thing it is per core and not by package of 32 core, also the price from M$ have lower a bit...

My point is that if you have a "yuge" organization that really can't easily switch software... you're that software companies bi***. I know. I've worked in Medical IT.

Yeah, Intel will be bleeding money. Data centers is where the war is being waged right now. We all know how has most cores and more to lose.
In the past year, Intel's data-center revenue has increased almost 20% year to year. Not sure if that can be considered 'bleeding money'. Currently AMD has 4.5% of the data center market so with a competitive chip, even a slower one... they're pretty much guaranteed to make gains on Intel. IIRC, AMD had 18% of this market back with the Opteron CPU. They got a long way to go to get to that number. As for the topic at hand, i think it's idiotic to charge for another license if the cpu cores are above 32. Hopefully people take their business and give it to some other company who isn't so greedy.

@Andrew LB It was a sarcastic response.
