Isn't it about time that we have 1 cable to rule them all? Sure, update the spec, but ONE CABLE!!!!??? Landfill is a real thing. Plus, it's annoying as balls having to change a whole load of cables every other year or so. USB C might be the one to rule them all. Now... this. (Cries internally but shows no pain).

Just use fiber cable then it will never need to be upgraded.

Lot's of disadvantages to using fibre. Not least, using high quality glass and laser for high bandwidth would be way too expensive. Cheap TOS-Link optical cable uses poor quality (in comparison) cable and LED's for light, its nowhere near enough bandwidth.
