Maybe I spent to much time as a kid watching Terminator, Johnny Mnemonic and BSG, or maybe I'm just a paranoid neanderthal but all this linking of devices and interconnectivity gives me the goosebumps and seems ultimately like a bad idea.

The same fingerprint scanner that works for around three weeks after calibration then decides that its had enough of being a fingerprint scanner and you have to go back to using the screen wipe unlock, until you can be bothered recalibrating it again? Unlock my PC with THAT feature.... uh yeah but no!

I know the feeling man. Thing is, though fiction at the time, it was still science fiction and I'm sure that sooner or later super advanced tech and AI will become a big problem. It's just a matter of time really (granted, it might take a while but still :P).

Yeah, I've had my S7 since pretty much launch and the only time I had to recalibrate was when I wanted to add my left thumb. It's not even in good condition anymore, after being dropped several hundred times the sensor is quite marked up and still works. The only time it doesn't is when it's covered in water, so this could be a handy feature if i ever go back to having my PC locked at any stage.

More pressing is using things to authenticate that you cant just go change at a whim. Its fine if its a second form of authorization as part of a Two-Factor scheme but if its all that used to authenticate well once its hacked its game over. I guess its fine for a home PC for physical access as the risk is pretty low.

It is pretty much useless to me anyway. It uses BT. I have USB BT dongle. But I have multiple computers. So how do I pair it with given locked computer if it has been paired to another one last time? And even if it is currently paired with computer I want to unlock... How long does it take to click yourself in this fingerprint application? I am quite sure it will take longer than typing password/pin on actual PC. And I can unlock my PC remotely from phone anyway. Running this command via RPC/RDP of user I want to unlock screen for with elevated privileges does the job.
@powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy unrestricted -Command "$sessionid=((quser $env:USERNAME | select -Skip 1) -split '\s+')[2]; tscon $sessionid /dest:console" 2> UnlockErrors.log
And since that is done through network, I can unlock session from anywhere πŸ™‚

@Fox kewl ok now learn how to put them in Suspend, or Power-Off state and how to wake them up via Internet. instead of having all those pcs turned on all the time πŸ˜€ hint: u need dynamic dns

Those 2 kids can do. And remote start from full shutdown is easy to make with few components. When I think about it, even sacrificing one port on router with OpenWrt should do the trick for maybe $4.

well yeah u gotta have opened port not necessarily openwrt router, but not completely retarded either πŸ˜€

Not rly, I meant that variant from electronic standpoint. Ports van be powered down and up again, triggering arduino micro with relay and timer which would supply power switch connection. I personally have no open ports on my OpenWrt router, yet there is perfect access to all devices behind it. Even on wifi. As I do not use NAT. That thing of mine works like switch... wifi to ethernet switch. Kind of magic in configuration. (and it no longer has accessible IP, it is fully transparent from networking standpoint)

lol no, u dont need any of that. the entire thing works by sending magic packets and utilizing Wake-on-LAN standard. And it works over Internet just as well as over LAN. arduino and relays... πŸ˜€

Except it does not work with 100% of devices. DIY which fits exactly your need does the job.

so its not something kids can do after all? arduino and relays and whatnot, instead of simply using already existing WoL is something these guys would do! https://abload.de/img/sgz9j.jpg

Dude youΒ΄re so right. Why doesnt the bloody thing works? I tried so many calibrations and it only reads my finger half the time. Its worthless on my phone i tell you, and this whole idea just seems like complicating things.

Read it again: "Those 2..." Means: "Suspend, or Power-Off" which you mentioned. :P Up to S3 I consider WoL working close to 100%. But then there is S4/S5. (Hibernation/Shutdown) With my board: S3 with lovely blue blinking LED is not something I want around - but it works. S4 is of no use to me, so it is disabled. And S5 unfortunately powers off LAN, Only front USBs for charging are alive. Edit: And btw. My main PC wakes up with me via BIOS timer at 6:31.

Too bad that the Samsung Flow requires TPM support from the motherboard. At least my Asus P8Z77-V Pro doesn't have that.

My fingerprint scanner has been working for 18 months. Maybe you should try warranty. I'm on Nexus 5x though, not Samsung.
