Will these discs be compatible with current blu ray drives?

how? output of an old BD player is only 1080, so it wouldnt even make sense to use it with 4K medium. just get the (cheaper) FHD BD and use what you have....

Some Blu-ray players have 4K upscaling, so they output at 4K.

Also is this why medialess video have emerged... I don't know if i would want a media full of crappy DRM again... it sound like a sword slash in the water. It's better, but still a step back.

I'll say it again: I'm glad they are calling 2160P Blue Ray Ultra HD, and not 4K, because some kittens would have died if that were to happen. 4,096 = 4K 3,840 = Ultra HD

I was asking about drives (on the PC), not bd players, which I've never owned, but went straight for the PS3 back then 🙂

No, current Blu-ray drives will not be able to read the disc's. They are called BDXL drives. They're no to expensive on Newegg you can find a LG for $50. Just search: LG BDXL

What's wrong with the current Terminator 2 transfer? My brother in law loaned me the new transfer of the original movie and it's night and day compared to the old one i have, i'm assuming any difference would not be as large given the fact the sequel is newer. Glad to see something announced, really do want a 4k TV but the lack of content has so far made it pointless. As per above, even though there are player able to output the same resolution, they won't be able to read the discs, don't even think many, if any can decode H265 either.

BDXL drives have been around for awhile, what would have stopped them from UHD video then? I suspect they will be new drives based off the technology of BDXL but not compatible with BDXL drives

Now you may finally fit a total of 10 Ultra HD Blu-rays on a single 1TB drive ...

damn it. I will be in the market for a new tv in a few months. Nothing too fancy but these news articles make me wonder if I should spend the extra 500-600 dollars on a decent 4K one.

The last transfer was done for the T2 Extreme DVD Editon, back in 2003 and it's still being used for the new blurays. *Slightly* cleaned for the SkyNET Edition. It's a 2K scan. And it shows it age, It lacks the fidelity that a new transfer can bring. Yes, it looks good, specially in the latest bluray limited release from July this year. (vs. the SkyNET release, the new one has no DNR and it's encoded in H264 vs VC1 and has slightly higher bitrate) So, it could be night and day. Just look how better The Terminator (2013 release, 4K Transfer, reused for the Red case bluray from this year) looks vs any release of Terminator 2.

is it the cut with Michael Jackson elected president of USA at the end or the one that finish with human extinction?

It has only 2, the Director's Cut (Theatrical Release) and the Special Edition (Added scenes, with Director's Cut Ending) So, no, the Extended Special Edition is not included. So no Michael Jackson (Actually, it's mentioned that he turned 40, not that he got elected president :P ) Also, I don't know what you mean with the Human Extinction.... Only Terminator 3 ended like that.
