Some Blu-ray players have 4K upscaling, so they output at 4K.
Yea, but the problem is they won't do 4k native. I just don't see the point in moving to a 4k TV anytime soon since very little content currently comes in 4k. These blu-ray players will change that though. The other big reason why I haven't bought a 4k TV is cost. And before anyone tells me that 55" 4k screens are under a grand... i know this. My problem is my TV room viewing distance is too far for a 55" 4k screen to be of much use. Since I won't be able to move closer to the TV, I need to get a much larger screen. And those still cost a small fortune. I know a few people with similar rooms to the one I watch TV in and they weren't happy at all because at 10 feet away, you need at a minimum an 80" 4k screen and even then it would be better to go larger. 4k is strange because on a normal 55" sized screen, you have to sit VERY close in order to be in the optimal viewing distance. According to this chart, a 55" 4k screen is best viewed from a little further than my computer display. http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.png full article: http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter/

No, current Blu-ray drives will not be able to read the disc's. They are called BDXL drives. They're no to expensive on Newegg you can find a LG for $50. Just search: LG BDXL
Oh good, my LG drive already can read bdxl I think. Thanks for the clarification.

Sounds good as long as the encryption gets broken so we can easily save them to our hard drives.

I'm sure it will.

poppycock. Total and utter horsecrap - and if you don't believe me then go to the cinema where the resolution is 4,096x2160 maximum, typically with a cropped image/anamorphic lens giving 2.35:1 Now then, if I take that chart and continue the lines - it indicates the resolution of a cinema has no benefit. Whomever wrote that is a grand Muppet or faker with no clue as to what he or she or they are talking about about. As for you - I guarantee you that you will see the benefit of a UHD teevee at home, you just will, especially if you choose one of the new Panasonic CX802 2015 panels, as the tech inside them is godlike and better than Plasma - and as a Plasma champion, you have no idea how many years it has taken me to say that...15? 20?...25? Go and take a look at these new panels at your local home cinema specialist and ask them questions, for real, don't go to online forums and download stupid charts by stupid morons, and certainly don't listen to me - go and look for yourself and you will (so long as you have decent eyes) see the difference and sell an organ or two to buy one. They are stunning.

What a load of crap that chart is. At 10 feet we supposedly cannot tell the difference between 480p and 1080p on a 30" display? :wanker: :wanker:

damn it. I will be in the market for a new tv in a few months. Nothing too fancy but these news articles make me wonder if I should spend the extra 500-600 dollars on a decent 4K one.
You can leave out the word "decent" if you think you will get a good one for 500 more than a HD model. A decent 4K model would be an extra 5,000 more...

Not true, the cx802 panels are the best on the market and start at 1,000, with 300 cashback right now. Check it, 700...and you won't have to google this, just click the links on the top of the web page here at Guru3d 😉

Yeah it looks alright I suppose. http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/tx55cx802b-201506294129.htm I see it is supposedly firmware updateable for HDR support which is one thing I would have worried about buying a current 4K set (a lot of them are already obsolete because of lack of this). It is apparently £2199 ($3,410) for the 55" model though in UK, so nowhere near £700. What size is that for? By the way I was talking about the £6K 55"+ 4K OLED models which are considered state-or-the-art over a £800 HD model... p.s. I don't see any links up at top of Guru3d for TVs???

40 inch OLED is OLED - I currently do not see these as superior with my eyes at these resolutions versus HDR local dimming, maybe when new panels come out I will change that viewpoint, but not now. Oh, I did have those links with the embedded links/ads on the guru 3d forums and main page.
