Trump doesn't want somebody else abuse all the back doors they produce with their chips. ๐Ÿ˜€

I am not one to get political here, but how is this a threat to national security? We actually have issues that are real threats to national security that have actually happened in the past few months, real events where people lost their lives.

Those issues can't be solved via twitter, so it's out of discussion. j/k, we know that this is not about making sensible decisions. It's protectionism at it's best, anti competitive, anti free market, anti free trade, etc.

They (US gov)have spoken the truth: the chinese company Huawei is lead by a former military of red PeopleLibArmy. Thats why Huawei and ZTE dont have the official right to sell phones on USA market. "Chinese manufacturer Huawei was expected to announce a partnership with AT&T to distribute its devices in the US. But the telecoms carrier has called off the deal at the last minute. You can already buy unlocked Huawei devices online and in some retail stores in the US, so itโ€™s likely that the Mate 10 Pro will also be made available. But a carrier deal would have helped push the company's products in the States. Despite being the third-largest smartphone manufacturer behind Samsung and Apple, Huawei has struggled to make a big impact in the US. This is partly due to a 2012 House Intelligence Committee report that warned carriers not to do deals with the firm because of the influence China has over it, which could pose a threat to US security." Better keep the eggs in your basket, than sell it to a foreign "enemy" company. And indeed chinese is on the offensive wave, they buy everything.Because they can, they have a lot of money from their cheap exports. https://www.techspot.com/news/73279-six-us-intelligence-chiefs-warn-against-using-huawei.html

The thing is, I don't trust a US company any more or less than those Chinese ones. They are subject to government overrule and influence just as well...

Every gov try to protect their goods in these days. Btw: "Chinese national pleads guilty to selling over 40,000 fake Apple products in the US He made $1.1 million from selling the counterfeit goods." https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/2/16966216/chinese-apple-counterfeiter-pleads-guilty-selling-iphone-ipad-fakes
Yes, bad times make people act conservative and protectionistic. It's proven by history, only that people don't learn from history. But he's not even brave enough to say so, he tries to sell the "national security" fearmongering BS. Also, that guy, $1.100.000,- from 40.000 Apple products? Sure, people were thinking they bought a real iPhone or iPad for an average price of less than 30$.... ๐Ÿ™„

Lets see all of our jets, helicopters, planes, air craft carriers, missiles, communication equipment, etc all use memory. And you would then have to buy it and rely on memory produced by a potential enemy. UH this is a national security concern. I will say it is a bit of a slap in the face for Broadcom though, back in Nov of 2017 Hock Tan went on tv with the president and said he was moving his legal h.q. back to the U.S. because of President Trumps tax plan. Ouch.

Then they would have to PRODUCE (fabricate) their chips (they are not making memory btw) in the US too. They don't though.

5G mobile is coming soon. Trump wants to keep China from getting the edge on it. Not sure it's something that can be stopped.

they make semiconductors, for brevity I was making point of relying on a part from the enemy.

At last the United States of America has a PRESIDENT that understands business and business decisions MUST be controlled via scrutiny and government regulation. The only answer is the far reaching control of the FEDERAL government; the people cannot have the power. Qualcomm is headquartered in San Diego and Broadcom Limited is co-headquarted in San Jose and Singapore. These companies will bow to President Trump, a man who understands intense business regulation is the way to keep us safe! In other national security news President Trump just pardoned a guy who took his phone into the missile control room of a nuclear submarine and took pictures of the missiles, warheads, computers, and controls and sent them to family via private message on facebook just before losing the phone.

I don't understand this post. it's like: "Pro Trump! Pro Government! Pro Regulations!" Whereas reality, Trump is anti-government and most definitely anti-regulations. I'm not trying to get into politics here, though i believe this post was inevitable and will probably be locked at some point due to politics simply guaranteed to come up in a post about Trump, but seriously, do you not pay attention to what trump does? He believes that the government needs to have less regulations and less involvement in business', but more in individual peoples rights, so really your entire post makes zero sense. http://video.foxnews.com/v/5681702790001/?#sp=show-clips

Correct, my post makes zero sense. Yet it is the story. What is said and what is done are often different.

Well, those are all US companies, so I doubt Trump would intervene in those cases. One thing I'll say is that I wish ATI still existed as an independent company in Canada. I never understood why AMD bought them, and still don't approve of it. Also, if it wasn't for the merger then AMD could have been in a stronger position to weather the financial crisis, which forced them to sell their mobile division to Qualcomm.

Good question and points - it's not a security issue to the people, it's a government issue. The US and China are both trying to be the most powerful countries. You gain a lot of power when you've got backdoors to what is the most personal device most people own. Despite Huawei's immense size, there's a reason they don't have much of a presence in the US. As for what they want to do with this power, I don't really know, and I'm not about to start conspiracies about it because I don't really care. Personally, I find this feud petty and ridiculous, but, I also care a lot less about my privacy than the average PC enthusiast.

Even as an American, I feel the same way. In some regard, I would rather have the Chinese government collect my info. At least they're more transparent about their motives.

I was thinking something similar. Even Broadcom is pretty huge, but Qualcomm's size makes me uncomfortable. Intel may be bigger, but they're getting a little too cocky and that's been backfiring the past few years. Intel is/was also on the verge of being a monopoly, so they're just about as big as they can get. But Qualcomm is growing very fast, and in a market that has a much faster cash-flow than PCs.

Wasn't ATI struggling at the time AMD bought them out? Though I don't disagree with your points, I'm not so confident AMD (or ATI) would've remained successful as independent companies. I guess that largely comes down to whether Bulldozer and Terascale were to still exist.

The notion that Trump has any clue about these chip-makers nor their implications to National Security is 0. Trump is a blithering idiot. That said, I have no issue with this move. I also think America is a bigger threat to the world than China.

Stopping the takeover of Qualcomm was in the best interest of consumer choice. It's also in the best interest of competition, free market and free trade.

I'm just going to leave this here since it makes a good point that no reasonable person could argue against.
