yeah, for past few years it was srs battle for a new market. Someone got its piece, someone got nothing and someone got punched too hard (*cough*OCZ*cough*).

Shame, in the UK at least they're still more expensive than they were 18 months ago.

Agreed, 120gb SSD's were retailing at £50 last year, cheapest you can find them now is around the £70 mark. Hopefully as larger capacities start to become avaialble (as sammy is setting the trend with the new 1tb ones) we will see further price drops. I want to see 4tb ssd going for <£250 in 3 yrs please. Then over the next few years after that we can phase out those ancient spinny mechanicle things.

They should simply make large storage SSDs with slower speeds. 250 Read/Write is enough for storage. But all they do is focus on making them faster and faster.

How suitable are SSD's for cold storage ie write once then occasionally read

I would say very, it's the writes that kills them eventually.

What is strange is the HDD's still being cheaper, given that precision mechanics are very expensive, even though OCZ got bankrupt...

It's called price fixing.

Could be argued that's what crucial did - they went for reliability over speed. The cynical few will say its because they don't know how to make fast drives...
