I'll never buy a console but the only reason I care is cause every time new consoles come out, the PC gets treated like an unwanted child for a few years until the console hardware is outdated. I'm hoping this time around with Steam it'll be different, that said however I wouldn't be surprised if Rockstar goes "we have GTA 5 on the PS3, 360, PS4 and Xbox 3... that is enough platforms, lets leave out the PC and blame Piracy".
I don't want that to happen because my interest in gaming has been dwindling over the years as it is thanx to the 360 stealing all the PC franchises and dumbing them down. I mean the only thing that has kept me going is all the indie titles and mods and 2012 was basically Dayz for me and that was it.
We have started to this this difficulty backlash though to be fair, where people are bored of games being too easy and being treated like morons. If a game isn't on an open platform like Windows and doesn't have mod support or an SDK then I lose interest. Normally a game has flaws that these fix or generally just adds new content. If that is gone then what is point? I mean for some reason developers can never make fun online modes, you have to wait for modders to do that. Why BF3 sucked so much, all the maps were boring, however imagine if it support custom maps, we've have so many amazing maps based on the destruction game, just like the old glassfloor maps in CS.

I don't see how 1.6 GHz even if its 8-core can be the future. You need speed / core and multi-core that is good ! The raw performance will be compared with a medium priced PC or even better but it has to last for a few years ! If the programmers and coders don't put the 8-core at good work and only 4 of 8 cores will be used or the game is a port everything will be the same lower versions in quality of PC games ๐
These consoles are just scarred to say we want to be GAMING PCs on budget ๐

When developing for a console game they will be using every possible bit of hardware available, not like on a PC game were they are alot of different CPU's to think of.
Will be interesting to see how this affects multi-plaform PC games in the future, but even now CPU speed isn't that important, i run mine at stock 90% of the time as there's rarely any benefit to games when you overclock.
Will probably get this when it's out, as well as the new Xbox and scale back on PC gaming, just realised most of my favourite games over the last 5 years have been console exclusive games.

My guess would be they plan on dumping the 10 year cycle and start releasing systems every 3-4 years again. I'd prefer if it were that way because this console cycle is what was keeping games like Watchdogs and Star Wars 1313 from being released 2-3 years ago. Then things will slow down again when cloud gaming inevitably becomes mainstream and chances are that's when graphics are going to plateau again.
On the other hand, it's managed to keep development costs from going into outer space (they're already through the roof), so it's not all bad. That being said, it's not like companies are being forced to make AAA, multimillion dollar games. There are plenty of people who have had success spending little to no money making retro themed or minimalist games on the current tech and the people that want those types of games (myself included) will continue to buy them when next-gen rolls around.
Either way, I can't wait to see what the PS4 is capable of. It's been a long time coming. ๐

The 10 year cycle doesn't mean the consoles are released every 10 years, just that they last 10 years from launch. Sony seem to do about 7 year cycles.

Oh dear. At the time of the introduction of the PS3 and Xbox360, the cpu specs were pretty good in theory, the GPU specs mediocre and the ram abysmal.
They have now downgraded every spec to abysmal, except the ram, which is mediocre at best looking at the lifespan of consoles.
As for now, there is no game in my collection that even touches 4 GB of ram usage (and that includes games with huge texture packs). Seeing what could be done with just 256mb on the ps3 is amazing, even though it pales in comparison to PC of course.
I'm curious to see how this will work out. The growth of mobile consumer products evolving the market for games into something new makes for a whole new playing field.
Now they don't only have to compete with the other console builder and pc, but with apple, google and a whole slew of companies making android devices who release new and improved product in very fast succession.
I do hope AMD will do a bit better because of the new consoles, because having only intel for x86 solutions would be a disaster.

To me it seems weak if the story whit the new nvidia card i right then the console are in a bad shape.

while i think ps4 probably could've gone for slightly higher specs, i think a lot of people here do not by any means understand how consoles work. You can get very realistic looking graphics on modern consoles that have maybe 1/5 the potential as ps4. They're not running windows, so why does it need more than 4GB of RAM and a CPU with the power of a full desktop? When you play a game that is optimized for a console, the extra specs don't matter. Hell even for PC gaming today, you don't need more than 4GB of RAM for the most demanding games. Could PS4 be more future proof? Yes, but PS4 could be the last Sony console that is designed for TVs as they are today. The next generation consoles could use a whole different type of display that PS4 may be incompatible with.

No wonder Epic was saying "Next Gen" consoles weren't powerful enough and needed a boost when they unveiled UE4.
Probably the reason they're not doing Gears of War with UE4 and doing Fortnite instead, because it would look too much like previous engine in order to accommodate consoles.
As usual, the majority of well funded developers will be making cross platform games, and therefor innovation will be stifled as usual. Since most innovators these days tend to be underfunded indies or work for companies not brave enough to push PC's true capabilities and just do consoles ports all the time.
In other words, all we'll see is slightly bigger textures, slightly higher polycounts, a few extra shaders.
There's more to games than cinematic quality /yawn.

I will wait and see, my kid is a huge Halo fan so leaning more to the Xbox console this year.

Ill eventually get one for some of the games that will come out. However i will wait for a while to see which one will be better.

Developers ain't tied up with APIs on consoles right? So it surely means they don't need the latest and greatest hardware to get a game to look and run amazing.
