1992 - Alone In The Dark - 320x240 upscaled to 640x480 (sprites only) - dark puzzle horror action 1999 - Silent Hill - Great Soundtrack - dark mystery horror puzzle 2010 - Alan Wake - modern graphics, below average soundtrack - mystery action I played all, and Alan Wake can be hardly considered as source material to next horror game from ones mentioned. Because they had better story, atmosphere and were generally darker in nature. Except few darker moments Alan Wake was like differently themed Resident Evil 1 - Go, kill zombies, see animation, kill zombies, go, bring A to B, kill bigger mutant, get shocked, repeat. I can't say I cared about characters in RE/AW, but I loved ones from Silent Hill and liked both AiTD original male and female.

The first four silent hill games are great, number two being a masterpiece. They´re prime examples of how opressive atmosphere with pacing and subtlety is done. After that the americans took over and the franchise died. With hideo kojima i sense a turn to the right path but the man is know for a huge verbal diarrhea he puts into games so i´m not convinced yet.
