AMD hasn't shared info on that just yet. Might be a silent launch though.

As a replacement for the regular 280 / 7970 shouldn't these be outright better when they call them for the 285? They have less vram and bus width or what it's called, maybe better clock speed or efficiency though and probably better energy usage. 🙂

what with dp 1.2a or hdmi 2.0 ?

Way smaller of the initial 280-7970...

So for sure this is coming out of GloFo... I think that's the best news! If they cut the die down to perhaps <300mm2, and a TDP at like 180W. All while providing performance say that (10% more) enough not to get right in close to the 280X when offerer in OC customs, basically keep it under the custom OC 280X's that will stick around for a while longer. MSRP of $230-240 and AIB like these being announced for $250 tops. These cards are not as big as the R9 280, PCB are less complex with 256-bit and only 2Gb. But lastly a die that almost has to provide better margins coming from GloFo, AMD has to be getting a better price per chip then TSMC parts, or what was the incentive for the risk AMD took in switching?

this is the third release of the 7970 then?

The 2GB of graphics memory comes with 2GB of memory? [Quote]These cards will get 2GB of graphics memory 2 GB of memory.

7970 already has seen 3 releases: 1. 7970 2. 7970 Ghz ediition 3. R9 280X

Tonga XT Comes Later
Most likely in September According to sources who wish to remain unnamed, we should see an AMD Tonga XT-based graphics card launched sometime in September. Our sources report that AMD is indeed planning to introduce an XT version of the Tonga GPU which will not only have a higher Stream Processor count, most likely 2048, but also come with a wider 384-bit memory interface. While no names were mentioned, we would not be surprised to see the R9 285X in September. The Radeon R9 285 is coming a few week ahead of the R9 285X and we should see it by the end of August. The most surprising piece of information is the wider memory interface, which means that the R9 285X will pack 3GB of GDDR5 memory. Our sources suggested that some AMD AIB partners already have samples of the new card and are tweaking clocks and designs. The new Tonga XT-based graphics card should end up faster than both the Tahiti XT-based R9 280X and the GTX 770 while drawing less power, which suggests that this should be a very good piece of hardware in terms of performance per watt. Of course, as with all early rumors, these should be taken with a grain of salt and AMD can certainly tweak some things before the launch but these information is what we have are hearing now. We will certainly keep our ear close to the ground as we are bound to have more info as we draw closer to the launch date.

To me the 285s are meant to replace the r9 270s if they have a higher clock speed that is than the 270s. The reason why I am saying this is because the 270s are similar specs wise. 2gb memory 256bit bus

Absolutely not.. 7970 = Thaiti ( GCN 1.0 ) this one is based on Tonga ( GCN1.1 ) If the shader count can look similar, this is one is based on a similar architecture than Hawaii . ( R9 290 and Bonnaire ) The memory bus is smaller, and the card should sport the same front end as Hawaii as the same core organisation, + ofc TrueAudio chips, DMA crossfire etc. Anyway, today have been released the Firepro W7100, who is too based on Tonga.. As for now if a R9 285XT with a wider bus will come out.. i dont know, maybe, but im not sure it will be based on Toonga so, maybe more on an Hawaii core with some SMX disabled.
