I'd rather they figure out how to make a drive that has a higher than 70% success rate. In fact just last weekend I got 3 3tb drives, 1 was DOA and 1 is starting to throw ecc errors. At work we had a similar problem with a much higher volume of drives.

I have been using Seagate drive for 10+ years and every person i make PC for has seagate drives in them, They have never failed once you people like to make up these failrate fiqures

I, too, have never had ANY HD fail over the 12+ years I've been building computers. Neither WD or Seagate (I prefer Seagate drives though).

Just because you havent doesnt mean its not true to any extent. I have had a few die on me since 2006. Only drives that have ever failed me have been seagate. Lost 2 different 2tbs this year alone and 4tb of data forever.

Agreed! Its posts like this/these that remind me of the things i tend to take for granted when it comes to pc's. Brute force and raw power is great and all, but i always forget about that one thing that makes being a pc enthusiast a lot less frustrating - Reliability. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lX0MB7pJtKs#t=9 Having a gpu and cpu that can crunch some serious number is super duper, but when i think of harddrives, my train of thought is always - 'Whoa, lots of gigs, I'll take that one sir!'. Not often do i think of the fail rates and reliability of HDD's as often as i should.

I had 2 seagate drives die in 1 week recently. 1tb tb internal and 1.5tb external. they sent me a 2tb certified repaired internal and I am waiting for the external replacement. my WD drives are still going strong. I had to rma a 1.5tb seagate for my kids rig too

This. Except for me, WD has never failed me, where I avoid seagate like the plague. it's just a matter of lucky pick.

I cant afford the WD Black 4tb so I decided to buy a Seagate 4tb. Almost as fast (just a little bit slower), but much cheaper. I have built so many pc's over the years and I never had a seagate drive fail on me yet. WD and Seagate have been good for me.

I'm guessing it's because the hard drives in a work environment are being accessed more heavily at all hours. On my PC only one of my drives has a lot of load put on it, the rest are just storage that are hardly ever accessed unless downloading from usenet. At work I have to replace hard drives fairly regularly - and that's even with us spending more for "high reliability" drives. These drives have very high load put on them 24/7/365 though so they're bound to fail. My home PC drives have never failed though - I guess I should just count myself lucky.

It makes me wonder if improper handling is a primary culprit. I haven't had any drives fail on me either.

Think it's more of a case of bad maintenance combined with heavy load. Computers being badly maintained, defragmentation in some cases has never been done, ... Neglectance is a bigger culprit then "bad" parts imo.
