I still remember how amazing the 5 1/4" disk was. Stuff like this will always be mind blowing.

I was going to say they were never amazing, but now that I think back far enough, you are right. When we got a disk drive for our C64, it sure felt amazing after the C cassette. But then again, this wouldn't be the future of those times if things like that tiny 200GB microSD didn't exist.

That has to be the most dense memory ever.

I remember when I was very young, a friends dad had some data stored on 8" floppies. They were massive and truly "floppy".

Yup, I saw a related article saying that Toshiba and SanDisk are working on 48-layer 3D NAND. They're pretty much making skyscrapers on the microscopic level now. Even the new HBM on the Fury X is doing layer-stacking. Heat and power will definitely be a concern, but this will eventually make its way into CPUs and GPUs. I imagine the first variants could do very well with just two layers, where the bottom layer serves mostly as cache and bus circuitry while the top layer gets packed with execution units where it would be heatsink-side for effective cooling. Process-shrinks are hitting a serious brick wall, 3D is the way forward. I drool over the idea of a repeat of 1990's-level performance jumps, and this is probably the only way we would see something like that again.

got one of these, but sadly it stupidly slow when transferring files via card reader. 10-15mb/s for 4gb file.

USB 2.0 card-reader I guess... Try to find some USB 3.0 capable card-reader.

Too bad most of the next generation of smartphones are all going to have sd-card support. 🙁 Apple and Google want everyone to sore everything on their clouds and pay a highway-robbery premium for extra internal storage. Bastards.

C'Mon! You know you miss it! See all the kids these days, with their instant-gratification devices... They just don't know the joys of waiting 6-10 minutes for a game to load off of cassette. Atari 800 - Castle Wolfenstein. Double Joystick controls. Good times... 200GB contained in something the size of a female pinky nail wasn't even fathomable then. It's still mind blowing now! 🤓

I paid €400 for a 4GB Sandisk CompactFlash card for my EOS1D MKII when I bought it a few years ago. Now you can get 200GB in same camera card for same price. Unbelievable!

After the death of my 2 year old 64gb Sandisk Sd Card, I'll never buy Sandisk products anymore. I'll wait for some company like Kingston to release something like that.

Sandisk makes good products. You had a dud. Big deal. Always backup your files and you should be fine. If you think you can go change brands and trust that the microSD card will not die after 2 years, then you're mistaken.

where are the SSDs for phones? I would rather have mine going faster, Samsung's s6 has something like that they said that was a reason they didn't include card expansion since it would make speeds incoherent and disturb users

Awesome, use this as a bootable instead of a permanent HDD? Would that work?

It's slower than a mechanical drive, so...

Sad indeed. A lack of any storage expansion is nearly a deal-breaker for me.
