I'd love to see SSDs of these sizes sell at affordable 200-300 €. 🙂

Is Samsung smoking that funny stuff? You can buy 4 of the 1tb variants for less than that.

Yea but what if you need more than 4TB, lets say 16TB space on a normal machine? Hooking up 16x1TB SSDs would be quite the hassle. This is for consumers that need extreme amounts of SSD storage, rather than a fair $/TB ratio.

Don't think so. First, today's largest Evo model, with 2Tb, is slightly more expensive than 2 x 1Tb, so one should expect some loss of economy of scale as we move to 4Tb. Second, this is a premium product (waiting for Pro version, I'll give you that) so it will always carry a premium price. Finally, you have TRIM issues, unless it was fixed for RAIDs.

If someone needs 4TB of storage, there is at least 3TB of garbage involved. That 3TB is static and won't be touched much. You better never turn off that system so the controller can keep moving that data around. If you think that data is safe you don't understand current NAND technology.

Why aren't they making storage SSDs yet? I mean slower nand, maybe around HDD speeds, which would be cheaper. I'm so ready to move to SSD storage, no more noise, vibration and moving parts please. Manufacturers are too fixated on speed, I think there should be 2 kinds of SSDs, ultra fast ones for boot drivers, and slower, extremely power efficient ones for storage but with good price/GB ratio.

Doesn't work like that. Manufacturers aren't fixated on speed, they are fixated on NAND density. The more dense the NAND is, the faster it is, the cheaper it is, the more efficient it is. Currently SSDs don't make great long-term storage drives due to leakage. That's probably why they aren't heavily marketing them towards storage.

Haha an average 70ms seek time as well ... aaah nostalgia.

I love that whole first paragraph and the "only" 20 watts. Cringey nostalgia is more like it, lol.

I'll take two please for 8tb Raid 0 but i'll have to ask the misses if it's ok to remortgage the house first.

Cost is the reason, not longevity. http://www.anandtech.com/show/9248/the-truth-about-ssd-data-retention
All in all, there is absolutely zero reason to worry about SSD data retention in typical client environment. Remember that the figures presented here are for a drive that has already passed its endurance rating, so for new drives the data retention is considerably higher, typically over ten years for MLC NAND based SSDs. If you buy a drive today and stash it away, the drive itself will become totally obsolete quicker than it will lose its data

@Margolis +1 even google's data shows the drives will have chips dying before write amplification/endurance will be an issue. but most people/consumers wont have xTB of data that needs to be "secure", so just using another ssd/hdd to backup my personal stuff will be enough. i rather pull out an external hdd every other week/month and backup my important stuff, while running a ssd-only system, than to keep listening to the "noise" i get from a hdd (even with silent drives out there). not even talking about (case) temps or transfer rates.

This. And i even don't bother with an external drive, i just hook up my WD Green instead of DVD (sad i know) and backup at full speed. Waiting for some cheap USB 3.1 docking station, i hope it won't need an external power supply.

Evolution of such kinda things make them worth less each passing year so let them develop more and in few years and their price will drop or better say would be more affordable (without the factor of earthquakes, fires etc...)

A pair of 2tb would be a better deal in the long run that alone save you $300 Here in USA that 4tb would cost just over $1500 when you get a pair of 2tb 850 EVO for $600 each where the 850 EVO 1tb $290 each when on sale like rigth now. Where this would come in real handy is in NAS drive

still waiting for that affordable $500 4TB Mushkin SSD that was announced way back
