It's very different to Lg's OLED. They will be using quantum dots to convert blue OLED light into R,G,B. The quantum dots should allow brighter display and wider colour gamut. Also with only using blue OLED, there is no variable ageing of the OLED colours which can cause colour shift over time. Should be a pretty decent TV technology, but still has some of the OLED shortcomings.

after spending half a decade misleading people with their "QLED" bs now they want to clear things up? oh jeez, their microLED plans must've hit a snag I hope they fail miserably and have to settle for the budget OLED brand, they have singlehandedly brought the industry to a standstill specially on monitors where 4k is still some kind of luxury and we are now doomed to watch white halos around cursors in the coming years and be constantly arguing over which LCD band-aid tech is less bad

Finally.. LG has needed some real competition in the OLED space for long time. I hope this will push better OLED screens since they apparently just cant come up with any better alternative screen technologies.

@Richard Nutman anyone with the money to buy an oled will have zero problems with colorshift, as i expect them to have calibration tools, and at least sony has calman stuff included with the tv sw. so yeah, let me throw away an oled tv in 3-5y because the brightness is low, instead of living with colorshift and use it for 5 to 10. outside the fact that i cant beliieve a company that was trying to convince consumers for years that qled is superior to oled, and now decided that oled is better. clearly theirs isnt, or we had them already.

Different companies. Samsung Display is looking at OLED, while Samsung Electronics is what is going down the MicroLED route.

It depends what your use case is. For movies, OLED is far superior yes. For rolling news on 12 hours a day in very bright rooms, QLED or standard LCD is probably a better technology when you factor in the cost.

Several of my friends have Lg OLED's. None have calibration tools. I very much doubt any significant number of OLED owners have either.

forgot how the lgs got so much cheaper, but most of those buyers get as the main tv, most of the customers i had buying sony were getting it for movies, so either had or at least were planning to get one, then again less of an issue as sony calibrates their their tvs. was more about getting a rgb oled vs just blue, as its easier to fix a volor shift than loss of brightness..

Well... U can do some type of calibration using stupid android phone with decent rear camera. It is not perfect, but I did that with my screen (c8) and with my parents (B9) and results was more natural looking picture. App is called color grab. 2 point calibration. Now I have X-rite i1 display pro calorimeter, and tbh, calibration my c8 involved more effort, and result was almost the same, maybe better color in darker scenes. It is better, but...my wife clearly does not see difference. But x-rite is good device, my TN may be not the best, but now look more natural too. No comparison to OLED though, when I send signal from PC to TV there is clearly difference with colors, especially red and green. Heck, there was big difference even with my previous IPS, that had 99% sRGB after calibration. So I really looking forward for OLED monitors, with decent refresh rates and minimum 1440p at 24-27"
