I only just noticed after looking at the photos in the news report, that if you turn the Steam logo upside down it looks like a c*ck and balls. I think I need to go look at more cat videos.

Sir I do think you need some help if your gentleman parts look like that.

I personally love the case and wish my PC was that small. I will definitely consider one of these things when my current rig needs replacement in 2.5-3 years.

Yeah, it looks nice - a bit Apple, but that's not a bad thing.

I hope they drop this Steam console ****, we play on Steam because we love PCs, if we wanted consoles we would buy them. All this does is takes the best thing about the PC away and will probably bring in a whole new market of noobs to ruin our online games. Having a barrier to entry is good, it is why subscription based MMOs always have better communities than F2P, you weed out the noobs. Soon Steam will turn PC gaming into Android and the whole platform will be ruined.
its almost as if this steam box thing is aimed at console users and those who don't want the hassle of self installing drivers and hardware, but want the vastness of the pc game catalog. Its almost as if Valve is exspanding on the products they have to offer. its almost as if valve are getting with the tims and are taking the advantage of what a prebuilt system has to offer. its almost as if you need to lighten the f*up and drop the pc elitness issues you have.

Don't buy this if you intend to use it for anything other than playing the small library of Linux compatible games. SteamOS does not support web browsing or anything else non-Steam related. It's basically a custom Linux that's gimped to the point of being near useless....

A steam box is a pc and there's nothing to say you can't install another OS on it.

That's the point. To get the full functionality of the hardware....you'd have to install another OS on it.

Steambox offers almost nothing really....other than a relatively low price. You get a barely functional, custom Linux (SteamOS) that can't do 98% of what Linux is actually capable of. You have to get all your software from Steam (yet Gabe accused MS of building a walled garden) so you're completely at the mercy of Valve. I mean, sure, if you don't mind ********* your games from a Windows based PC, it's a great deal....you get to use 2 systems to achieve what a single Windows based system is capable of on it's own.

Even if Valve makes every a Linux version of every future game coming out, there will still be the problem of all current games that aren't on Linux Wine or str eaming just won't cut it, Valve must come up with a better solution

Honestly, if you were to start from scratch, installing ubuntu (my choice) or a similar linux OS would take an hour at most, and be free. And then just install steam.

The steam os is also free, only the hardware is not. That's the idea man, it's not to lock people out, it's to make things simpler. To get that power up and play mentality for a PC. It's OS first and hardware second. Steam's linux game library is already pretty decent, and any games you buy on there that support any other OS do not require you to get a separate version (which sounds obvious, but many companies would try to screw you over on that). It's already a better start then any other console launch titles in terms of both quality and quantity. If they can get the user base up in numbers of people using the Steam OS they will be set. I can hope.

Valve is not competing with MS or Sony, they are not in the same league when it comes to making a console. All Valve will achieve is weakening the PC brand and making the real consoles look even better.
And.. how did you come to this conclusion exactly?

Don't worry nobody is taking away your rig any time soon nor is anyone forcing the PC industry to switch to consoles/steambox format only. BTW hacks and jail breaks are surely to exist for this steam box later down the line

The point of Steambox is to have a simple box that can play pc games. Nothing more. That's what console people are used to.

I assume that this thing doesn't have a blu-ray player?

By comparing the selling points of the consoles to this? This does not have subsidised hardware, it has no exclusives and the games have no resale value. It also lacks two selling points that PCs have over consoles , one being that it's more than just a gaming machine, and two and most importantly, it lacks support for a decade plus back catalogue of games.

Valve's priority is SteamOS not assembly lines. Upgrading shouldn't be an issue just send it back and have it done to required/available spec. As for games, XBOX gen1 managed to overcome this so I don't see how Valve out of all tech companies has less of a chance who knows what they have up their sleeve or what's to come in the future?

But not everyone is capability conscious of all that hardware, it may seem like a waste and it is from a practical standpoint but we are a minority of that opinion, average Joe has no clue and probably doesn't care. Yes that decade old catalog is a trade and a potential cash loss but those who are old enough to remember such games wont be using a Steam box. Valve's doing this ether way and if they fail it's none of our cash so no worries there.

There are a few reasons why people are cynical about this. The main one is that nearly every PC gamer would stick with their present way of gaming, while console gamers would only consider a Steambox if it had a good amount of SteamOS exclusive games. It's hard to see who the market is. Hardcore PC gamers hate the idea dye to the fact they are worried it could be a success and those who game on monitors and use mouse/kb are ignored in favour of the big TV UI and game pad controls. Casuals will also end up feeling ripped off by these systems when they find out the majority of past and present games don't work.
There won't be any kind of Steam OS exclusive games. Who said that you can't use a mouse and keyboard? After all, the box is nothing but a PC. Also, I bet you can build a PC at the same size at better quality and cheaper, but that again really depends on the market in the end.

IM sorry this basically a PC in all in one box form? why would I buy it when I have pc and why would I buy it as a console when Consoles games are made for Specific Hardware for the life of the console. This is basically running PC games off (linux off Steam) which are forever evolving unlike console. in 6 months forget about in year or 2's time there will be games this cant run at 1080p 60fps with out needing to be upgraded. Which would come back why would I buy this when I have pc? I see this as steams way of converting Console people to PC with out actual telling them to get pc, but once they fiqure it out that probably cheap to just get pc or make then this why would they buy. But then we live in world where if you making people will buy no mater what.
