Amazing. Some people go extra-mile to preserve open libraries.
I wonder if he wrote script to loop download through IDs auto-increment.

I told quite a few people who use that service a lot about its worsening struggling status over the last year and none of them made the small effort to pay for a premium account to help the company out. Very disappointing really.

That's the official statement from their blog regarding the whole "50 days" story.

900TB? That's BS if you ask me. You would need almost 100 HDD valued at close to 40k to store all of that.
Humanoid_1
Not so sure it is BS, I've used P2P networks where individual users have shared at the time up to about 27k worth of HDD share

at least half of that is "preview" songs from record labels. SoundCloud is pretty useless place unless you want to buy music or know whom exactly to search for...
That's from my experience anyway.

Jeez, I don't understand why people do such things. Ok, he preserved 900TB of files, so what? Did he do it just because he can? Or just to show off?
He didn't make a world better, didn't create something new, didn't help anyone (with the exception of those telcos he is paying for his internet channel)...
If anything - he just wasted lots of power absolutely for nothing.
We don't need another 900TB of wasted space just to save these files from deletion, because (Oh, NO!) the site is closing down. We have 1000 other places where we can download our music from.
And 900TB?
Ok, I guess he now has time to listen to all this music... until and centuries after his death.

I always wondered how they make any money at all. It's great place for streaming but purchases seem better made elsewhere, like Bandcamp for example.

Have you seen the costs of harddisks lately ?
https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/569341/seagate-skyhawk-10tb.html
Not that I would trust my data to Seagate, but ignorind RAID and other losses, that's just ~27.000 euro in drives. Less than the price of a decent new car.
900 TB is no longer out of reach for someone with decently deep pockets.
Combined with the cost of computers/controllers/enclosures, it would probably take about 35.000 euro.
And don't forget, in US computer things are cheaper.

Well done him.
He just cost 900TB of bandwidth and may have reduced the service for other people.
I wonder if Soundcloud will have to pay extra for him to abuse their services.
