I told quite a few people who use that service a lot about its worsening struggling status over the last year and none of them made the small effort to pay for a premium account to help the company out. Very disappointing really.

Not so sure it is BS, I've used P2P networks where individual users have shared at the time up to about 27k worth of HDD share

at least half of that is "preview" songs from record labels. SoundCloud is pretty useless place unless you want to buy music or know whom exactly to search for... That's from my experience anyway.

Jeez, I don't understand why people do such things. Ok, he preserved 900TB of files, so what? Did he do it just because he can? Or just to show off? He didn't make a world better, didn't create something new, didn't help anyone (with the exception of those telcos he is paying for his internet channel)... If anything - he just wasted lots of power absolutely for nothing. We don't need another 900TB of wasted space just to save these files from deletion, because (Oh, NO!) the site is closing down. We have 1000 other places where we can download our music from. And 900TB? Ok, I guess he now has time to listen to all this music... until and centuries after his death.

You raise a good point. Maybe he collected more lossy-compressed versions? In other words, maybe he downloaded what would be 900TB but for archiving convenience compressed them to spare a few hundred TB. I figure all the dead air found in podcasts is highly compressible. On a side note, apparently 140 people are being let go. I think instead of making all these administrative changes, they should regulate what/how things get uploaded. Much like Youtube, Soundcloud is loaded with garbage content, but unlike Youtube, they aren't funded by a gigantic advertisement company with cash to spare. Maintaining that much storage is understandably very expensive, so they could help reduce the costs via methods such as: * Reduce bitrate to 128kbps for non-paying users. This offers "good enough" quality for the average sound source, and is plenty good enough for podcasts. * Content that hasn't been listened to by more than 10 unique users within the past year gets deleted or highly compressed. * Use ads for non-paying users. I don't recall ever seeing ads. Soundcloud doesn't really give enticing reasons to pay for a subscription for most users. As another thought, Soundcloud makes for a good hub/repository for media. Where the media is stored is irrelevant to the vast majority of listeners. They visit Soundcloud for what it offers, like being able to find postcasts, playlists, the media player it has, and the social aspect about it. Soundcloud could alleviate a lot of their load if people outsourced their own storage, but used Soundcloud to do all the work. I'm sure the most expensive part of running it is the storage.

Are you questioning his expensive/useless hobby? How useless are those 300 mhz I can crank out of my CPU? Worth a few hours of testing? If you start questioning it, this whole overclocking thing falls appart :P On topic: SoundCloud isn't album-released music, it's singles and remixes from independent, usually web-only, music makers. I don't really use the website, but I know some songs I like very much that were only available on SoundCloud.

I always wondered how they make any money at all. It's great place for streaming but purchases seem better made elsewhere, like Bandcamp for example.

I know a lot of peoples who effectively post their songs and music there, but honesly theres not much benefit to have the premium account. ( can upload a bit more song, and get some covers and flexibility, but not much ) If you dont make much money from your music, no need to pay for this. The point for them is just have some visibility.. not much else. ( well, like arstation for graphism, it is good too just have sometimes a simple link to give as portfolio ) But whatever, when speaking with them about the possible close of the service. the thing is they are not really worry, it is their songs who arre uploaded, and so they have the original ..

Have you seen the costs of harddisks lately ? https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/569341/seagate-skyhawk-10tb.html Not that I would trust my data to Seagate, but ignorind RAID and other losses, that's just ~27.000 euro in drives. Less than the price of a decent new car. 900 TB is no longer out of reach for someone with decently deep pockets. Combined with the cost of computers/controllers/enclosures, it would probably take about 35.000 euro. And don't forget, in US computer things are cheaper.

Yeah I can see all that too. I've come to realise in the last few years what a wonderful resource it is from watching so many well produced youtubers channels coming up with such a wide variety of beautiful music. I truly hope SoundCloud finds a way to make it through all this successfully 🙂
