there is no point buying previous gen over a new one, 280x is a much better choice than 7970Ghz, period. it's even faster and cheaper than 770gtx... Anyway, i can already feel the 699$ barrier on 290X:)

Eh? They're pretty much the same card. You get a fantastic bundle worth a fair chunk of money for the same price or less by going with a 7970GHZ over a 280X. Your post makes no sense.

What optimization?

You mean you'd go for a significantly worse deal for minor differences? Whatever makes you happy I suppose.

I've seen the msi frozr and asus dcu2 7970 for under £210.
Its more of the case of showing our ridiculous pricing compared to the US.

Tempted to sell my 7950 and buy a R9-280X, but I'm going to wait for a couple of months, see if the prices change much.

You'd be better off buying another 7950 for Crossfire and selling the bundle. You can get decent voltage unlocked cards for £180. By the time you've sold the bundle you're looking at a pretty small sum for a fair upgrade. Unless you're aiming for a 290 I really don't see the point in upgrading to the new series from a 7900 card.

I feel no need to go anywhere from my current rig. The 770 still bests the 280 in various benches and overclocks great plus AI have the 4GB version. The gigabyte has a nice windforce design and it's quiet. Will probably go Nvidia 9 series next.
Yeah, these cards would not be for you, 290 series might be.

Yeah, I'll wait for the 290 series reviews. No good going to 280x from overclocked 7950 Ghosty, your 7950 performs similar to stock 280x, sure that will stretch the gap once overclocked, but not by that much, definitely not worth the upgrade $$$

Not really impressed with the results so far.... Was hoping for a bit more. They won't be getting my money for this gen anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

wow, Ov3rclockers.uk are selling the Sapphire Dual-X 280x for £239.99. That's a great deal, gtx 770 performance for almost £100 less. Nice indeed.

Thx Hilbert for this nice review , i just wanna say if u allow me of course ! 🙂 , i think u have some mistakes here (it's just me comparing the data u put in this review to others ) So plzz feel free to correct me if i am wrong , that would be nice 🙂 So firstly : 1: r9 280x it's a rebranded hd 7970 ghz but at less frequency 1ghz/1500 in ur review u have the msi at 1050/1500 so in term of performance it should be the same not more than the hd 7970ghz right ? plus u said here "Honestly, this really is the Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition (the one that can boost the clock frequency). With a few tweaks we see it perform slightly faster than that Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition" , what "few tweaks" ?!!! 2: r9 270x it's also a oc hd 7870 but when i look at ur data it's seems not right cause oc that card from 1ghz/1200 to 1050/1400 ll impossibly not give those extra numbers 🙂 so i think the mistake here , that u tested those card with a new driver and put them in an old chart of those hd 7xxx with an old driver that's why u get the 280x better than th 7970 plus the crazy 270x vs the hd 7870 , in fact u can see here at HFR they have the same conclusion about the 280x=7970ghz http://www.hardware.fr/articles/908-6/performances.html using the same driver on both of them even wizzard when he tested the 7970ghz (13.9W )and the 280x (13.11B) he have 3% of difference so maybe if u can check again using the same driver on the 7970/280x that would be nice and thx again for ur time 🙂

I'm interested to see if most of the stuff AMD is doing these days is more talk than anything else - but honestly it's quite exciting. I wonder if NVIDIA will go on the defensive or offensive moving forward.

About as exciting as reading the 770 review.

not sure what your problem is, it's on par with gtx 770 but for a £100 less, that's not exactly bad. but yeah, I'm waiting for the 290 series review.

The 280x is a refresh of the 7970. Its as interesting to me as the 770 refresh of the 680. Boring

true, but at least the 280x is priced competitively so I can see a lot of people jumping on it.
