Honestly... that's not a bad price compared to what they used to charge just a couple years ago. Still stupidly expensive though.

Intel laughs "I can still sell shit for more".

There is such a shortage on the market that availability seems to trump price at the moment.

Intel being Intel.

It's CPU for servers, so we can't apply normal consumers logic on them. Yeah, these new CPUs will sell just fine.

Yup. After 3 years you can write them off anyway, so...who cares?

Just to have worked many year with Intel's Xeon i can tell you that they are less expensive than before. Epyc gain point few ago, but haven't still gain the IT's heart... Intel is still THE provider of CPU for company.

Yea few years down the line they will be on ebay for 30 bucks.

Meanwhile a Threadripper with 64 cores costs what, half? EPYC shouldn't be brutally expensive either. But ya, high demand and server stuff always sells.

Nah, they would be collected by a recycling NGO to give you a certificate, and then auctioned off for charity, or the elements steamed off the carcase and used for manufacturing industry. It's big business, recycling - check the options for businesses; it's pretty extensive.

Meh, rumored apple m1z 20core chip beats even 64core milan. 😀

TR 64 core play in the below league, you can't compare it with Xeon exept with those that are i core rebadged. Epyc is the real outsider from AMD in here (and cost more or less the same price for a complete system), it does prety well but as said sale contract are generaly for 4 year, so as Epyc really does great since around only 1,5 or 2 year, you will see the 1st effect in 2 year, and until that AMD should keep it on rail whenever it's a win or miss. This is how it work, this is how Intel have done to grab the AMD's Opteron market some years ago.

But Apple doesn't make real server, only WS (anyway server doesn't care if it is Arm cpu, X64 cpu, Linux, Apple or M$ Windows connected if well configurate) and M1 gen is very very very well cost and energy friendly.
