New technology always costs a lot in the beginning. The price sucks but I can't blame them. Look at new cellphones. If you buy an iPhone or Galaxy s6 you're paying $600 or more unless the cost is built into your plan. Same thing with game consoles. If Microsoft and Sony had no other source of income other than the sale of the hardware you can bet the prices would be around $1000 or more.

I did not expect anything less F*up than this. For the start I expected this with FB "investment". But they should be proud as it costs double of what it was intended to cost when people backed it. I hope Valve & HTC has Vive ready for reasonable price as they developed a lot of things in meaningful way. BTW. that entire FB "investment" was not really necessary as it did not speed up anything, they were waiting for screens and in meanwhile they got tracking to 90~95% of what it is now.

https://www.oculus.com/en-us/blog/powering-the-rift/ So no wonder it needs a 970.
Rift's resolution is just 25% above 1920x1080. If it has adaptive sync people would run it on cards like GTX 680 or HD7950. With little sacrifice like FX/SMAA instead of SSAA and 60+ fps would be achievable nearly in every game. But trick is in having adaptive sync. With that price tag it should have had this important feature.

25% higher resolution but 50% higher refresh rate than standard 60hz plus rendering from two different angles is more complex than just one larger angle the little blog post there said roughly "3x the power for 1080p60 required"

But that price tag! Man that's crazy! Even more considering the Rift has been in development for years, and this is the lowest they can get it to? Not impressed! While I don't see it having too much place in personal setups, business and professional setups is probably the right market for it.

It will be interesting to see what price of Playstation VR will be. Rumors of a sub £300 price mark.

Entire idea, and thing which was backed up by founders, was to deliver it to anyone interested in $350 or less. If manufacturing costs exceed $350 per unit then they have failed on their promise. But in reality it may cost like $150~250. I am sure we'll soon see cost analysis by one of those sites which specialize on dismantling things and calculating manufacturing costs.

Get a 4k screen instead if you're going to splash-out that kind of money.

There is people probably trying to justify the price comparing it to when consoles first release they cost around this much. Well guess what? This is just a glorified gaming accessory for 6 freakin hundred dollars. You need a decent pc to run it, it is not a standalone device like people trying to compare it to phones. At least I can use my phone for VR too, google cardboard and wireless controller. Can enjoy it on the sh*tter too, cause I don't need to be connected to something.

Yeah the price is most definitely disappointing. The plan for me was to get the oculus and another GTX 970, to run SLI, because I know one 970 is not going to cut 1440p x2 at 90hz synced. I was really hoping the price was going to be in the $400 range like they said. Oh well, guess ill have to wait for the price to drop.

At this point I have to agree. I checked few other site from google and everyone is talking price. I have not seen one person stating that they have ordered that thing. And I have seen posts from hundred+ interested people in this tech. If I consider that SGS6e has 2560x1440 screen running 60Hz and it has virtually no input lag, then only things which GearVR has worse than Rift are refresh rate (which is not needed as much), graphical horsepower and additional head tracking in space. But this smartphone+GearVR costs same as Rift while actually having no need for PC.

Resolution in total is only 2160x1200, In 2013 Price target promised was $300 and if possible lower. In 2014 updated to $350 or lower. They plan on selling about 1 million units of this version. i do not think it is realistic as this price tag induces disappointment even in hardcore VR fans.

Unlikely as you basically have to purchase a GPU with it (external rendering device)

I don't see many people purchasing this thing because I think there is only a small amount of people who are interested in VR. While I think others will think that this thing will fail like the Virtual Boy did. I can see only a few hundred thousand of these things being sold but not 1million maybe 100-300K.

It's not really a gpu, it's just combining the image, some filtering and doing some 3d audio. Ps4 supplies two barrel distorted images, VR processor combines image and unbarrels it for the hdmi out http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-playstation-vr-external-processor-revealed What use would an egpu be with only a hdmi in (no real data for use there) and a usb

same price as the standard 27 gsync wqhd monitor, I don't see why they are "failing" they obviously are aiming it at that market I would take that thing over yet another 27 gsync monitor anyday, at least its something new but yea its just bothering that this crap should cost like 200$ to build at most, its just a tiny oled phone screen, not even a 4k one like that sony madness, the point stands though, the guy buying the 27" gsync 1440p might be interested in this now lets wait for HH's review ^^

LOL So, Zuckerberg will make that money back once he has sold a staggering 333,333,3334 of them. I thought this guy was supposed to be smart.

First biggest fail of 2016, lol even at 300$ that wayyy to much, i wonder what idiots gonna buy it.
Would you think paying $599 for a really good monitor is crazy? When you consider what the rift is (a monitor that straps to your head that has flawless 3D and tracks the entire gaming experience) then I think you can start to understand that $600 isn't crazy or only for "idiots". It also comes with a bunch of accessories that enable the complete tracking and interaction in VR (camera, controller and pointer thingy). I think people are going off half cocked here... It is a great price when you consider that VR that couldn't even compare to this cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars not that long ago. This is new tech, remember LCD and Plasmas were like $30000 when they first came out. This is NOTHING compared to that. I understand it. I'm VERY surprised guys coming to a Tech website don't.....

Are you serious with that? Wow... The IQ around here is FAR FAR less then I thought.... I have to stay away from these forums... It's getting me frazzled.
