I think they could generally sell more game related merchandise before they actually launch the game. Because with everybody the hype's the biggest then, no matter what game. Except BG3 maybe.

For this to be a real starfield merchandise doesn't have to remain empty ? :P

People will be very exited about it, then forget they have it in a week or so

I had actually forgotten the game even existed. Steam numbers dropped off after about one week and I just checked twitch...there are 922 Viewers. That's not people streaming the game, that is actually watching people play the game. Congratulations BGS. You created a game so boring, that people could not even be bothered to review bomb it. https://cad-comic.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Silly20230904a.x42600.png

must be the most boring and emptiest case ever

Why are metrics so important to you? Play the game or don't, and move on like the rest of us. Here's another metric. It's still in the top 10 most played xbox games of October: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/most-played/games/xbox

Also still in the top 40 on the SteamDB!

It's also one of the top 10,000 games of all time...
What?

even a potato can enter in the top 10K with gamepass...

What?
Metrics allow us to measure something, and, in this regard I am measuring the success and failure of a computer 'game'. This is also why the computer project 'Star Citizen' is not a computer game, because it has never been released as a 'game' and so, is in a state of perpetual development. I am certainly looking forward to this project being released as a game, so we can all read the reviews and look at the results for which we measure the success and failure of a game. Back to your Q for which I am trying to give you an A to... It had a lot of hype, and once it was released, it became a cult, like so many of BGS releases of the last ten years - meaning that people would defend it for no reason other than (I suspect) sunken-cost fallacy. Starefield is a poor release using (from running the exe through nvidia Nsight we can see this) SM4.0, which I suspected would have been DX8 by the SS's I saw in promotional material, and I have backtracked on that analysis, once I ran it through nsight to check, and it runs SM 4.0, which is part of DX10. As a fellow guru, you will know that, just because you compile a game in DX12 (which they did) does not mean your actual shader language is DX12. They used DX10 shader language for a game released in 2023...and those shaders were 'new' in 2015, however...I still believe the code is possibly a branch off some shader code they had when they were using DX8-9, so...sort of 'like 'DX9+' instead of fresh and brand new DX10 code. Which would make sense...I mean, you wouldn't write new DX10/SM4.0 code now, you would just use mesh shaders bundled in DX12U in HLSL. Also, you will know (I think you spoke about this a few years back) that running OLD shaders through NEW compilers are hugely inefficient with 'modern' graphics cards. The cores and threads of current day graphics cards are able to run shader code concurrently. Once one execution is done, a core/thread can be assigned more work using another shader for another purpose, one microsecond to the next. Old shaders are nowhere near as good at these sorts of modern tasks, versus using NEW shader language. So, in one specific regard, I am beyond astonished that a new game released this year by one of the most well known studios not only released a game this badly, but, Microsoft backed it and tried to use it as an excuse to pimp out Gamepass to unsuspecting gamers. It's a big topic. The discussion about this 'game' is far more interesting than the people trying to cheer-lead it, complete with pom-poms and back-flips. To me...It's like gloating about your K/D ratio as your team loses the match. As always, respect to you and these forums, but really...my fellow gurus, wake the F up - it's a terrible game that no one is playing. And, I must add - my response is tame compared to what I could've said about this.

Look at the games it is bigger than, and come back and tell us no one is playing it. What even is this discussion.

It's a much bigger discussion I didn't think I would need to have in 2023. With respect, you ask me to ignore the metrics, close my mouth and not play a game and state I should not allow any critical thought to become known - and yet you now wish me to delve into the metrics? I am reminded of a conversation I had with a friend over 15 years ago about DJ's who play a certain type of music. He stated 'name one that plays that music' and I of course did so, he then same, 'ok, name me two!'. To which, I of course busted up laughing and said the following which I am also saying to you: "How many metrics am I allowed to list until I am 'right' ?" 🙂 It had a big release, lots of hype, lots of noise, but now is a quiet whisper in a sandstorm. AFAICT, it is because of the sandbox nature being a grain of sand deep and a trillion light years wide. The content is needlessly protracted. The missions and variety of missions are merely variations on the same theme. The industrial complexes on different planets, with different missions and different aliens are actually the same. Open crate at A location, using key at B location yielding object C. The locations are the same, just, different objects with different names. Busy-work for the sake of it - almost as if people are paying money to BGS to be an employee of BGS, and, their job title being 'lackey'. It's lazy game design. Plain and simple. The thing that stood out to me as a clear 'FU' to players is, they give you a space ship to fly to a planet to do this busy work for them, but, they do not let you land it close to the objective, just to pad out the runtime. So again, by what metric am I permitted to use? Will I be allowed to use whatever metric I want, or, am I only allowed to you use one that supports a contrivance? Twitch users is a VERY reliable metric, just ask Jeff because he will tell you there is a direct correlation between people playing a game on Twitch and people who order the games being played, or not. Twitch numbers right now? 879 viewers https://twitchtracker.com/games/506438 This shows the drop off, and, I think it's simply the lack of content and 'things of interest for the player to do'. Far too much rinse and repeat, for a game set in space with spaceships and galactic travel. In another life, Todd Howard was a ship captain, promising men on the docks for a life of riches and exotic women in tropical locations...yet, after they get on board they find it's all a lie and it's months of exhausting naval travel, rowing, washing decks and basic repetitious every day... No thanks.

This might look bad on your monitor, as I do not think these forums have decent markdown plugins for markdown language (HH - please visit this topic when you upgrade your forum software, thanks, in any case, when you finally upgrade the forum software, the following text will look awesome and until then, people will have to cut and paste into a text editor with markdown support to view it properly) but you can see how the current crop of shader language looks. Again, OLD shader languages will work when you compile them in NEW API's, like DX12U, but, they are immensely inefficient when running. Why do the internal stripes split halfway up the case? Deja Vu for the rucksack, nukacola rum.....must be a mug to buy one of those cases. A bit of gfx work on paint.net and a trip to ebay for transfers and it'll save you £100's and have the same effect.

Keep talking to yourself mate. I have no interest in being baited into the 80 topics you have brought up to my one. For a moment I thought about trying to tie this waterboarding of a text back to the original topic but is it not worth the effort. Have a good day.

/tips hat Respect. Hope at some point you look into the shader languages again as it is an interesting topic and I know you have touched on this before (I forget which game it was) and how modern GPU's handle the different shader languages after being compiled with an API from intel/AMD/Nvidia. The talent in the games industry is always looking for new shader languages to write and optimize its code and perf with new shaders. It's a shame when Microsoft/BGS and TH seem to not bother, just to sell a few subscriptions for Gamepass, by misleading people (again) on false promises...
