Something I am confused about.... why does the 3060Ti have 8GB of memory while the 3060 has 12GB of memory?

3060 Ti has a 256-bit memory bus. A single physical memory chip has a 32 bits interface. So, 256/32 is 8 memory chips. The vanilla 3060 has a 192-bit memory bus. 192/32 is 6 memory chips. Memory chips only come in certain capacities, typically 1GB or 2GB per chip these days, in the past just 512MB, in the more distant past merely 256MB. So, with 8 memory chips, 3060 Ti can have either the 8GB it does have, or by using 2GB memory chips, 16GB. Nvidia clearly thought 16GB would be a waste on it. 3060 could have either 6GB or 12GB. 6 was probably thought too low in 2020's, so they went with 12GB. Edit: This can be made a little bit more complicated by having memory chips on both sides of the PCB, basically doubling the amount of memory, but that's a story for another time.

This just shows nvidia has no plans to release 4060 anytime soon so instead we get this.

Another 3060? Nvidia stock of 3060s must be giant...

As usual, NV must have a high inventory of GDDR6X. Happened the same situation with the GTX 1060, had at least 7 different versions, including one with GDDR5X.

Would have been welcome 2 years ago. I will be waiting on the 4060 (Ti).

Well, im still happy i managed to get a Gigabyte (non Ti 3060) one with 12 GB on it about a year ago, better to have more memory than too little. Sure it wasnt cheap but on the other hand it was a birthday-gift so i didnt complain 🙂

Its still slower than 3060ti in every game due crippled memory bus and far less cuda cores.

Could be, but based on the rumours, Nvidia and partners also got a surplus of the GPU chips themselves they desperately want to get rid of now that the new gen is launching. The only way to get rid of the GPUs is to sell whole graphics cards, and here we are. Maybe they think these refreshes of old cards will excite some folks who otherwise would have waited for the new gen. I fear the real reason behind anyone buying one of these would be the outrageous prices of the new gen. It wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia raised the mainstream prices by 100 dollars and more.

It maybe slower but perfect for gamers like me who only game at 1080p 60

Then the whole idea of having more vRAM is redundant.

I don't know if it's redundant but certainly an upgrade over my 1060 6gb. Games that I've played in the past that I would have to set to medium I can now set to high or ultra depending on the settings.

Also maybe @stryfe2010 can get gifted any card and be happy without having other guys weight on the decision of who bought the present. He clearly said i m happy i got a 3060 with 12 gigs. and that's it. No one cares if it is slower/faster/or custom fitted for the software it has tu run, since it is his card and he clearly stated it does the job pretty well. the fact that resolution demands the memory you need is bs imho. The assets of which the game is made will do the memory requirements. Large and lot of textures will use a lot of memory at 1080p@60 ad 2160p@120

All the game assets and effects are rendered in higher resolution so it does uses more memory.

if rumor that are going around are true this incarnations of 3060 will be even slower

Memory bus of 3060 isn't crippled, same ratio per shader as 3080. Accordingly, VRAM OC pretty much doesn't scale at all. Which shows that GDDR6X of 3080 was overkill instead. Yes, 3060 isn't fast. But at least it can run Spiderman with RT in 1080p without VRAM pressure slow downs, unlike 8GB cards: https://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/marvel-s-spider-man-remastered-v-1-1006-test-rt-c-dlss-fsr-2-1-i-intel-xess111

shame it can't run any other rt games without dipping into 30-40fps range.

it's worse than 2070 Super by about 10%, tbh it's barely faster than last gen 2060 Super. 12g vram is nice but it's like getting 32g of ram for an older 4c/8t cpu that is going to struggle with modern games anyway. 99% of the time you're better off with a newer 6/12 w.16g
