I love how ManuelG got me to submit all sorts of documents saying that he'd see if he could 'get it fixed'. Could have just told me they'd blocked it and not have me waste my ****ing time. AMD 390 series pls come soon.

NVIDIA got excellent job because NV disables very WELL OC for notebooks!!

How many people won't buy Nvidia based notebooks because of your example? Answer, not many. How many people won't buy Nvidia based notebooks because of this block on overclocking? Answer, a lot. Don't be so quick to judge.
Rofl. Vast majority won't give a toss. Only the forum dwellers looking for an excuse to whip up some drama will care.

Oh f**king hell Nvidia, I'm expecting my new laptop with a 970M next week. My current one has an 860M which overclocks like a beast and I was hoping to repeat this. Ah well, I have the 347.25 drivers ready. Looks like I'll be sticking to those for a while. Edit: I mean the 344.75 drivers.

Honestly? Not really. How many notebook users actually overclock their machine? 1%? What nvidia did is absurd, yes, but they are not going to change their mind. We just got an official statement but this lock was made months ago. I'd say, deal with it and use the tools available to unlock it again. They are probably only doing this so people wont say "If the overclockability was enabled by default, nvidia supports it". We all know those that really care about overclocking will find a way in the end. They just dont want the average user to find the option and burn their machine to ask for a refund in the end.
I think a lot of people overclock their NVidia laptop GPU, even if it's not a gaming laptop, and there are huge gains to be had. For example, on my 670MX I have an 87% overclock on the core, and a 64% overclock on the VRAM, and the temperatures don't go over 69 degC; previous to this I had a Dell M1530 with 8600M GT that had a 50 - 85% overclock (depending on whether core or shader), and neither of these GPUs have ever failed on me in all the number of years I've had them overclocked. It's terrible that NVidia are eliminating overclocking on their new mobile GPUs, and I think the desktop community would do themselves a favour by supporting efforts to get this turned around - for example by signing the petition - because if this lockdown cancer starts with laptops it's all the more likely to start infecting your desktop space further down the line. Here's the petition, please sign up to stop the rot (before reaching your desktop space too! Only requires an e-mail address and password, took me less than 1min to sign up, I'd never signed a petition before): https://www.change.org/p/nvidia-re-enable-overclocking-on-geforce-equipped-notebooks

Are you saying mobile OC works for you on the 347.25 set? That shouldn't be the case, it's been disabled for several driver revisions now.

They've probably replaced the sys file from 346.87 which is pretty pointless as its a major part of the driver. You may as well just run 346.87.

Too much yelling, too little info 🙂 Have Nvidia laptops always worked like this (no overclocking), with OC "bug" (or bug) permitting OC being just a recent novelty (as I am reading this) Or did NV laptops have overcloking capability since forever, and this recent Overcloking block is an unacceptable novelty? 1. or 2. ??

NVidia GPUs on laptops have been overclockable since about 2008/2009, that's when I first started overclocking them, with the introduction of the Verde Notebook Program - when NVidia started supporting 'all' models of laptops in terms of offering drivers for them. So, for at least 6 or 7 years NVidia laptop GPUs have been overclockable.

I see... But this is from 2009 and it seems that even back then the OC-ing has been blocked in standard driver: First you will need a driver for your GPU that will allow overclocking. Laptop drivers are modified from the desktop version to prevent overclocking. You will need to download a desktop driver that will allow the overclocking software to recognize your GPU But I suppose there will always be a way to hack your way to OC, only this time around it will require even less official means than before.

I've been overclocking on mobile Nvidia GPUs since the 425m, and it's never been locked out until about 2 months ago. ManualG's response is extremely suspect and smells of BS.

Yep, I was mistaken with the dates. It was 2010 that the NVidia Verde Program started, and it was from this point that laptop GPUs could be overclocked without using hacked drivers, here's a link showing when Nvidia Verde Program started: http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2010/04/26/nvidia-verde-notebook-drivers-redefining-the-notebook-pc-experience/ So, it's for the last 5 years that NVidia laptop GPUs have been overclockable without hacked drivers (I used hacked desktop drivers before that point). Gaming on laptops :wanker::scream: 🙄
data/avatar/default/avatar27.webp
Is it hard to change the bios of their mobile chips? If not just flash an overclocked bios over the top. This is how I run my desktop cards.

and lose Optimus and whatnot... ?

Is very feasible and not as expensive as it used to be. I don't see why people like you come in to threads for just troll comments. **** off.
data/avatar/default/avatar02.webp
I can tell you right now the only reason they do this is because they have probably been sent loads of fried cards from idiots trying to max their **** laptops. This is not a marketing move lmao. Some of you are so cynical about everything. Which is fine but yeah these moves happen when people just say **** it we aren't going to keep getting these in the mail from retailers....
Not necessarily loads, (how about not many, but more then desktop based?) but whatever number of fried cards they have been getting, it made sense for someone who's in charge at Nvidia to risk backlash and block it altogether. Whether this is a reasonable decision... what's reasonable? I guess it depends on which side of the fence you're standing.
data/avatar/default/avatar32.webp
Lol this is brutal. I enjoy overclocking, as long as the notebook has good cooling there shouldn't be a problem. I have the gtx560m in my Asus g74sx laptop over clocked 24\7 for 2 years now. No problems! At stock settings after load for 2 hours it would be at 64 degrees and when over clocked its at 68. Big whoop

So sick of these worthless petitions. Petition Fukushima, petition bankers.... I really can't give two F's about some notebook gamers. Sorry truth hurts.
lol you're in Mobile GPU overclocking thread what are you mad about, let people vent
