I feel so incomplete as a human being not having DX 11.1 or even PCI-e 3.0 /sarcasmoff To state the obvious, not having DX 11.1 on windows 7 was by design to push people to windows 8. Not having it on windows 7 will only give me more reasons to delete my windows install to make the switch back to Linux.

DX11 is sparse as it is anyway, how long will it be until there is anything decent with 11.1 ? Don't think its much to worry about tbh

So how should they make Windows 8 compelling to new users? By porting all new features to Windows 7? Why would anyone want to upgrade then, or what would be the point of new OS? Linux is great for what it's made for, but threatening to switch over not having DX11.1... that does not sound like you really mean it.

Well first I will say I have not tried windows 8, why? because a new feature I want has not been shown to me yet. Windows 7 has all my features so I don't want to upgrade. "what would be the point of new OS?" Sure Microsoft has a long agenda of reasons!

DX11 was backported to Vista, yet Windows 7 was apparently appealing enough What I don't like is that when the next-gen consoles finally come with DX11.1class hardware, the PC versions may still be DX11 only(since they want to target Vista/Win7 as well, and they don't support DX11.1). It will be the same deal if DX12 comes with Win9 and isn't backported. Imagined how much faster DX10/11 had gotten support if it had been backported to XP

Would've only made a significant impact imo for DX10 since so many people didn't like Vista. With 7 however, most of the people who could, upgraded.

What was the point in upgrading from Win95 to 98? Or from Vista to 7? Unless you're upgrading every other release, there's typically very little reason to upgrade unless you're using Linux or Android. Windows95, 98, 98SE and ME were all part of the same branch (version)....just minor revisions. Vista, Win7 and Win8 are also part of the same branch....just different revisions. Win2K and XP were even part of the same branch. Win95, 98, 98SE, ME = Win4.x Win2K, WinXP = Win5.x Vista, Win7, Win8 = Win6.x

Not surprising although unfortunate, I guess it's the same for DirectX 12 then and whatever follows that, thus making people upgrade if they want that functionality. 🙂

These reasons are why me and my MS Rep tied to my account arent getting along as of late. They want me to buy into the windows 8 program for me and my sales of systems we build and sell but I have blantly said no... Seeing more of these we wont do this for Windows 7 over and over makes me shake my head hell its not even out of normal support hell... whats next no windows updates

I think the most frustrating thing is when MS finally gets something right with Windows 7 (credit where credit is due, I've liked the OS since it's conception till now) they are so ready to take a dump all over it in favor of crappy Windows 8. I'm not saying Windows 8 should not happen, they are welcome to try, but to not give W7 a service pack 2, not give it DX11.1 and kinect support... why does MS insist on shooting itself in the leg? With Windows XP even- we got SP3 after Vista was already out. And I bought into the excuse why DX10 could not work on XP. But this time around there aint an excuse. This time it's not "Shoot yourself in the leg, tell everyone it was by accident", it's "Shoot yourself in the leg on purpose in front of everyone and expect them to feel bad for you". Or something like that.

The problem is mate, they have us by the bollocks and they know it. If DX11.1 contains a **** load of new eye candy they know we will all make the jump even if the OS has its drawbacks, for many of us anyway. :bang:

****load of eye candy that 97%+ of game developers won't be using in games that will be released in 2013 - first half of 2014. by the time game devs will land their hands on dx11.1 there will be win9 or hopefully "fixed" win8, which should be good.

I read that and it doesn't sell the idea of windows 8 to me. I guess getting to know what I want in the first place could help! Im a minimalistic user and I love keyboard shortcuts. I have a love for Linux because it kept my brain sharp all through my college years. And I do find my self wanting to use Windows 8 when the time is right, when? Let my be hypothetical and say i'll wait till I build my X88 with DDR4, thunderbolt, all solid state drives and touch screens, touch whatever. Should be fun! Fun will be had enjoying the performance bumps from one OS to another. Windows 7 has always been a temporary thing for me, but it serves be good so I never switched back.

You nailed it.

Agreed, though I'm a bit sceptical if Windows 9 will be something good again.

Should be called "Window 7 touch and App store edition" Don't want. I will be cynical and say Windows 8 should be a free upgrade or just free considering the ads and apps, **** should be 100% monetized.

I'm not trying to "sell" Windows8 to you (unlike MS). Quite the contrary. If you're on Win7, there's really no reason to move to Win8 unless you work in IT and your company has made the unusual decision to do the same. If you're on WinXP or older, that's a different situation altogether. In that case, take the cheap route and go with Win8 + Start8 (if you don't like Metro). MS is typically rather conservative with changes from 1 release to the next. Between Vista and Win8, the majority of changes were to the UI itself. Very little has changed that will actually make a difference for most users....unlike Linux that can see a very wide range of changes with each release. If we were talking about Linux instead of Windows, I'd have no reservations in telling someone to go from say, SuSE 12.0 to 12.1 or 12.1 to 12.2. With Windows however, there's very little to justify "upgrading" with each release. If it wasn't for the UI change, I'd still be using Win7 myself.....but, I happen to prefer the new UI. The rest of the OS was pretty irrelevant to my decision to "upgrade".

What ads?? I haven't seen a single ad yet outside of forums...
