I left Nintendo consoles after gamecube when they decided to really cheap out on their hardware and games stayed super cartoony which is just not for me.

Well ... at least it won't be a boring console like the current two with a nintendo badge on it.

My son loves the Wii I would have liked better graphics (graphics junkie) our Wii is coming to the end of its life this could be a nice replacement for casual gaming, I am not interested in Xbox or PS as I use my PC as my main gaming platform I like NVidia is getting back into consoles who knows maybe Xbox or PS in the future that would remove the Async irritation for NVidia

I've been saying for ages that they are waiting on X2 Pascal Tegra and it could be the most powerful GPU in existence. That's because they are able to utilize Close to Metal like never before and this will match a single 1080 depending on which CPU they use. NX will be game changing for Consoles. It will be a beast of a machine that will do a solid 30fps @ 4k and some games may even do 60fps @ 4k if they bother optimizing properly. I have some insider info that promises that X2 has 6x the performance over X1 if GDDR5X is used along with it.

Isn't it supposed to be a handheld? What's the point of 4k then?

Huh? It's a mobile GPU, a mobile product. At most it will have 400 CUDA cores (up from the 256 in X1).. the same CUDA cores in a GTX1080 only 2100 less. It's also using the same graphics API as PC can, Vulkan, if it's indeed running on Android/Linux. It's not doing 30fps at 4K unless it's like a mobile app side scroller nothing game. It certainty isn't matching a 1080 or being "the most powerful GPU in existence".

There are purposes for 4K in mobile, if you could attach it to VR headset for example, something like Google's Daydream. That and the device is supposedly able to tether to TV's -- where obviously 4K would be advantageous. That being said, there is no a way a Tegra X2 is pushing any modern game at 4K @ 30fps. The X1 barely manages Borderlands, with significantly cut down graphics, at 1080P. Might be able to do some mobile games at 4K, but it isn't doing any of those at the latency required for VR.

What the hell am I reading??? So you think the NX will have a mystical GPU that is more powerful than a $600+ desktop GPU? Also somehow will consume acceptable power for a mobile console (5-10 watts)? Nintendo is supposedly aiming for a total cost of 199 for this thing. I wouldn't expect more than 400gflops in mobile mode running at 540-720p and then an upclocked actively cooled scenario when docked at 1-1.3tflops 1080p. That is best case scenario. Knowing nintendo it will be 200gflops mobile 6-800gflops docked. Unless all rumors are false.

X1 is a 500 gflops part. This X2 will be faster most likely somewhere around 1tflop region or so. It would need to be 2-3 tflop for 1080p tbh 😀

It's 500gflops in a shield console though, with active cooling and ~25-30w of power. The NX is supposedly a mobile unit that can dock for a console experience. So if Nvidia can double the X1's GPU perf/w with pascal/denver/arm improvements they might be able to do 500gflops in mobile mode on a 5-10w envelope. Then it docks, gets active cooling and goes up to ~1-1.5tflops at 25-30w or whatever. Readonly is basically saying that in mobile mode it will play the same games, at a reduced resolution for the display that's on the mobile unit. When it's docked, it gets the extra power and just uses it to push the resolution up to 1080p.

Ah Shield is something like that. Okay cool. Yeah reduced resolution for sure.

If I remember right, the new consoles, when broken down in some reviews and such, compared to a PC. Came out, roughly around the same as a 7870 and 6300 which is still around 4 year old tech... And still years behind a PC. But this is still good news for Nintendo and its fans. I was always a Mega Drive fan myself back in the day. And loved my Gamecube... The wii? hmmm take it or leave it. But I hope they have soom good games lined up and not more Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong over and over...

Yeah while the Nvidia shield which had the X1 chip was very good for what it was being able to run some AAA games such as the Doom 3 remake. It would be very interesting on how powerful the X2 chip is and what kind of ARM Cpu the NX will have.
What's funny is the Xbox 360 variant of Doom 3 was upscaled, and had dips galore and no sign of any post processing. The Nvidia Shield Console version runs at 1080p, 60fps with no dips, and even post processing. So I am excited for the NX if this is true. CPU power wise, ARM is pretty efficient and is pretty cheap to mass produce. Also considering the size of the cores, and the power draw it would be easy to throw as many cores needed in the silicon.

What this reminds me of is the Neo Geo X gold which was a handheld with a docking station that would allow you to use the unit on your TV. However This NX idea will have proper scaling so you can have a clear and great picture on your TV something that that the Neo Geo X gold lacked.

PSP also had video output, it output only on 480p and was windowboxed on all sides to display the lower than 480p resolution. Still used it a bit though.

360 is weak af compared to nvidia shield tv. It's roughly on par with Wii U. But then again Doom 3 is not that hard to run on an optimized platform 1080p 60fps.

BFG was not very optimized, but the 360 should have been more than enough to run it at 1080p at 60fps.

360 had serious lack of ram tho as had ps3. Which made a lot of stuff hard to run if not optimized really well. There were a lot of really shoddy ports on 360 that should have ran 1080p really 🙂
