I've just heard the newest cryptocurrency will only run on kettles and toasters.

The crypto sh*tstorm is turning into a sh*thurricane.
I guess that's a glimpse of the coming times, a full-blown dystopia like not even movies imagined. Shortages of everything, environmental destruction, angry mobs of zombie-like people... and so on.
Great time to be alive !

There goes my Ryzen 3D then, with its 128MB cache.

If you consider the kind of money organised crime is handling annually around the world (a trillion dollars would be a very conservative guess) and how stupid looking old school pyramid schemes even in small countries have allowed the culprits to make millions, it's quite easy to understand how crypto can flourish. What is more surprising is that Western countries are doing absolutely nothing about it. I wasn't following the Glasgow climate conference at all, but I'd be surprised if the leaders attending actually talked about crypto at all, even though it would make a nice, quick sacrificial pawn. If you think about it, the Covid-19 was a lottery win for crypto miners because it has robbed so much of governments' attention, plus with people stuck home or with no money spent in travelling abroad, I imagine quite a few more actually decided to invest in crypto.

While this will most likely increase the prices and limit availability, I doubt it will be as bad as GPUs. this requires more than just the CPU. it requires a motherboard and ram which do not seem to be part of the calculations here.

More governments need to ban crypto.
This is out of control, and causing to many problems.

If Monero (XMR) didn't cause Ryzen shortages when it switched to RandomX algorithm I doub't this will cause it.

This news is worse than you're all thinking.
Bitcoin and Ethereum are best mined on GPUs.
Chia is mined on storage drives.
Raptoreum is best mined on CPUs.
If you're smart enough, you don't put all your eggs in 1 basket. At this point, there's a mining market for everything. Now, miners could buy pre-built PCs in bulk and still make a profit, especially now that they don't really have to get all crazy with risers, modified PSUs, and other parts that have no resale value. It likely costs less for them to just buy another PC, and then just sell it later.

I though Bitcoin was best mined in ASICs.

It's not mining, it's wasted energy. We've already have a monetary system, now we need thousands more?
No point made, just a little rant.
