Wow! We need more original and witty posts like this! At this point we all know that mass data collection is just a conspiracy theory, and doesn't actually happen. Even if it did, we all know that there could never be any negative, or unexpected consequences. In theory, a bad actor could use the collected data, or even re-purpose an exploit used to collect data...but then that's just theoretical, right?

Right, the NSA is just an after school club that makes Windows exploits for learning more about computer science 🤓 :giggle2:

People can say whatever they want, but I'll not buy any products that collect information and will tell others to avoid them as much as possible. Since information collection in some products are unavoidable evil, I'll block it and teach others to block it as much as possible =) People who are calling others names or overreacted, remind me of those who were shouting against round world theory.

Depends on what those analytics are... I generally don't mind telemetry if it is strictly being used to improve reliability and security of software.

Happen to use a R7000 myself. Looks like this will the last Netgear Router i owned. Also i don't have an option to disable it.

people need to stop telemetry has been used for while and it all started with smart phones if not long before that i didnt see people going ape **** about that back then, Now that is more openly acknowledged and known as opposed to back then there are up in arms. it the digital age of everything being on internet, every piece digital data is farmed. even when you think it not it is and can be.

There's no reason to collect MAC addresses or serial numbers at all.... Anyone that thinks collecting information that can be used to identify a specific machine is acceptable, needs to remove their heads from a certain orifice....

^^ wait you think that all wasnt be collected to begin with? all of this has been collected for very long time. they are just being told up front about it as opposed to not being told. Is it wrong some stuff telemetry collect sure. it unavoidable if they want it they can get with out people even know about. dont want to be tracked or data collected from you get off the internet and go off the grid. only way that will ever happen in this day age. Faster people accept this happier they will be. it has nothing to do with have ones head in their ass either, has to do being realistic, realizing this how tech is now and side effect of EVERYTHING being connect internet and satellites it ALL tracked.

Have you updated to the latest firmware? I don't see how Netgear could have switched this on absent a firmware update. You likely don't have an option because your router isn't collecting it.

I have and use this router and I see no issues with them collecting data. But only because they give the means to turn it off. It's more than I can say with Windows 10 and Nvidia drivers. Not a big deal IMO. Update - I just updated the firmware and after rebooting, it shows a page with 2 options. 1. Automatic firmware updates yes or no 2. Data collection yes or no. I appreciate their transparency.

Who cares, i wish i lived such a simple life that this was important.

I disagree. I don't think it is transparent because they are enabling it by default when you update the firmware and not specifically calling out the change. Only the most tech-savvy of consumers would be aware of this option. The type of data being collected is also indefensible. They are essentially bugging your internet connection. There is no legitimate need for the breadth of data they are collecting. I would MAYBE think it is okay if it were disabled by default (opt-in) and the data collected was much more limited in scope. I think it is unfortunate that anyone is defending this practice. People need to be aware of how valuable their data really is, and of the potential for misuse.

Get small fanless Atom x86 systems, install LEDE on them and never look back.

It had to be enabled by default as most people are lazy and would not opt in, you need the lazy people to have to make the effort to opt out. If it is important you you then you will find a way to opt out, if it's not important then leave it enabled as it's probably improving the hardware/software, or just simply making the company money without you even being troubled. I really don't put any value in my data, some people may do and that is their preference but it is not any of their business if i do not.

Did you not read? They aren't informing people of the change. I shouldn't have to read news posts (if there even ARE any!!!) about my devices each time I update them to see if the manufacturer has decided to start spying on me and selling my information off with who knows what kind of protections. Be real. It has nothing to do with being lazy. They hid this change and the reason why is that almost no one, when properly informed of what data they are collecting and what they are going to do with the information, would want them to do it. Thanks for being an apologist for corporations taking advantage of consumers. :stewpid:
