4K container allows for 150 Mbit, not just 128. turning up the sharpness to past 80% on a screen (outside maybe office use moni) is one of the worst things for picture quality. especially since some have (separate) settings for upscaling. no need for 8K content, can be upscaled from 2/4K like its done now. completely ignoring that you would need a 85" or bigger to make use of the res, or sit 3ft from a 65/75", which no one will do. recommended MINIMUM distance is related to res AND screen size, that doesnt mean i HAVE to sit at 3 ft distance to a 55", its up to the user.

How many people have a hardware decoder for av1? Quite no-one, both mobile and TVs. Sisvel dosn't think it's royalty-free...
anticupidon:

Can it be solved with an software update? I really didn't find an complete answer.
TVs have crap SoCs, software decoding is mostly a no-go.

I read that the Dav1d author is looking into GPU acceleration, curious how that will go. The hybrid decoding support for HEVC on Kepler did alleviate the CPU alot back when I tried it IIRC. I wouldn't mind trying AV1 on Netflix on my laptop next time I'm using mobile broadband, the cap is a bigger concern for me than power consumption. It's a pity it's only for Android so far, I doubt my old Nexus 7 2013 will handle it.

What a bummer. And here I thought that a firmware update could mitigate a portion of the decoding mechanism and at a later stage, getting new TV or the codec is upgraded to support older hardware. Just wishful thinking.

Funny, I honestly did not know this was possible or even know this was being done. Very nice.
Care to explain what this is supposed to be showing??

They say you won't notice a difference in quality - is that really going to be the case? I have a Netflix 4K subscription and I can always see hella artifacts in dark scenes, it ruined Stranger Things S3 for me so much I ended up just downloading the files rather than using my subscription and watched it on MPC-HC with MadVR, immediately made everything look so much better. Until Netflix can offer me quality that will actually take advantage of my bandwidth - meh.

Most of the new 4k HDR stuff on netflix and amazon prime looks amazing.

true but that $10 a month subscription aint gonna cover 200mbps outflowing all month, or wed all have cheap internet.
If you were using 200mbps internet from netflix then you'd be at least doing 4K, which is not $10 a month, it's $16 As well, the $16 plan allows you to stream up to 4 devices at once. 4K stream from netflix per device, from their own provided information, they recommend a 25mbps internet connection. Effectively they are stating that one account @ $16 a month could potentially use 100mbps at one time. I feel it's reasonable that if netflix were to allow some customization of their plans, they could have the same $16 a month plan allow up to 100mbps streams for 1 device and no other devices would be allowed to stream at the same time. Or like what is requested, a $25 a month plan to allow 1 device up to 200mbps. Not likely in my opinion that any of this will happen, as well as i don't think it'd be necessary to go much beyond 100mbps for quality purposes unless we start getting 8K content, but theoretically it should be possible without much issues/hurdles.

Ampere will likely have a av1 decoder, but no encoder.

Amlogic will have one too, soon.

Better than H265? Remains to be seen/proven. Until there's a GPU that supports Hardware Acceleration as it has for H265 and even VP9, won't change my 1060 anytime soon. I'm saying this because I really see it as the next successor of VP9. Netflix and YouTube only in case they adopt it, it's more than enough for me. I never cared much for the quality of the picture ( 75Hz/1080p simple IPS monitor ). Currently ~200MBs H265 episodes for any series at 720p is more than enjoyable for me. ~400MBs for 1080p it touches my monitors limits I guess ( at least generally visually ). I can't justify some episodes that have more than 3GB for an episode. And my Internet is without packet limits of course but still. I would like some day to have side by side a proper 10bit encoded episode and monitor with more than 92% of adobe RGB coverage to see what the fuss about.

Because if your rolling over an unpaved road in a air suspension ride ala RR, of course you will ask what the fuss is about. Not when its the latest +500HP car with sport suspension and low profile tires. watch 720p on a 55in UHD screen, and you will clearly see why just going up in res 1080p/2160p for streaming has a big impact on picture quality. usually about 7gb/h and up look decent enough to watch it and not feel like im using YT.
