Any reason to buy this MSI monitor over the much cheaper Dell Alienware version?
perhaps, but not compellingly.
this is a 2nd gen qd/oled and the Alienware 1st gen. the 2nd gen seems to have a slightly better dci-p3 gamut (but not enough to justify price).
it seems Samsung has improved the yield issues with the 1st gen, which is good overall.
but there is a huge premium placed on the 34" size. you could buy the 42" ROG for less and that has some peace of mind features (like heatsinks) or stick to 34" and buy the Alienware which is awesome

Is there any info somewhere that this one is the 2nd gen? Im pretty sure 2nd gen ones are going to be 240Hz?

Samsung had been saddled by manufacturing issues as the qd/oled process means buying an LG woled panel then additively putting qd color layers on top of the LG panel in a excruciatingly precision near microscopic process that lines the pixels up with the rgb QD layer somewhat like printing...except with power and switching. the QD layer in the Alienware is the same as Samsung's two year old TV/monitors.
this year's models have a new QD layer (same as Sammy's ips line up) and benefits from the advancements. as far as the LG woled panel that is used, that is also newer with a higher nit value. so the MSI/ ROG/CoolerMaster/Samsung G9/etc.. released in 2023 have the newer spec, but differences remain in the implementation like heat sink and power supplies.
the frame rate on OLEDs shouldn't be compared w/ ips. the OLED is vastly superior at the same Hz with substantially less blur
this is all available online but it's a deep read
