I don't know why they even bother, in a year or two 4K HD TV's will be a lot more afforrable that they are now. Will it be more reasonable to get one of those as a monitor?

I disagree on the time, it will take more than a couple of years for them to be affordable. To asnwer your question, for gaming you´ll need a beast of gpu to handle 4k.
