Funny thing is people spend a fortune every year or two upgrading their last £400/£500 apple phone or tablet to the next new one, so i am surprised it has taken consoles so long to go down that same route of upgrading every few years
I don't want to bash apple, as they have created a wonderfully closed system that pretty much keeps itself alive (I bet they get off on it), but people buying a new iphone each year... well those I don't see to deserve any better. I believe nobody doing it with consoles was that nobody thought it would really work. Or make sense in terms of games that certainly are in development longer than a year (except the usual cash sows CoD, Far Cry, etc.). Haven't come across a single phone app that would work that way, but then I'm not using that many apps on my phone anyway.

So basically - Computers, linux, PC & OSx I doubt an upgradable console will be made. More like a console with expansion room, much like the N64 with it's RAM slot upgrade. I see no point in this. It will make for bad releases, lots of bugs. Look where we are now with PC releases or console day 1 releases.
while i personally guessing more to "cloud-based-gaming/streamed" platform for next "console" but when we talk worldwide, internet connect in someplace not always stable/fast... like other places... so cloud-based-gaming cloud be more limited but If console make upgrade-able, it will not a single parts, its more blocked, like google Project ARA smartphone but this have big issue, people been known that console just play... when console maker introducing "upgrades", especially if the upgrades cost not cheap, like half of console(starter pack) prices or more, then i dont think many people getting it or it can be like buying branded PC... current console is almost like branded pc anyway in developer end, dev. need more work to support various console variations.. while graphics-settings not that hard, as it can be like "preset" when upgrades pack are present but still optimizing more variations takes time.
That's exactly why I stopped buying consoles with the PS3 already. Those few exclusive titles didn't justify buying a console for €400 or more to play God of War again, for instance. As well as graphic fidelity being crap compared to a well built PC.
for few exclusive titles getting console is totaly not worthed but speaking graphic fidelity... especially to ported games some ported game run at 30fps... and those ported ps-vita games which basically smartphone graphic quality then controller support issue, dead-zone issue not forget crash/freeze issues in pc gaming

Well I haven't gotten any of those 30fps ports (boykotting them), and I usually don't play ps vita ports. I hardly use a controller, and to be honest, every single freeze or crash has been related to my own doing by overclocking. At stock I haven't had a single issue. So...

Just like how UWP will be a thing.

New consoles, not upgradable ones. It'll be more like in building a library of games wich work on previous generations of consoles starting with original Xbone and making sure that they keep their customers this way. So, if they release a new console, older games work perfectly fine and even faster and with higher fps. They realised with this Xbone failure to beat Sony, that if you have to buy a new console and start a whole new library of games for that particular machine, you'll may consider going over to the competition, even more so when they have the bigger&better console for a lower price (it was at launch). So if you invest in an library that will still work on the new machine, it won't be the old one upgraded, but a whole new console, you'll be staying in their camp to protect your investment. You could sell the old one to someone who settles for less and will still be able to play the same games as you, only with a lower res and lower frames. It all fits and they are trying to mimic PC's games library wich work no matter how old. Nice move there, and I'm sure Sony is doing the same with their NEO PS4 that's about to be released.

i still never understood the console hype.. i do respect handhelds tho! consoles was cool back in the day cuz not everyone could afford a pc until dell came around with that 2350 p4 w/ ht. but i like having a machine that is a all in one. i can do audio mixing, video editing, gaming, programming, internet, apps, performance upgrades, case mods, low power downclocks, high power oc's, etc the list goes on. i only used ps3 because it had blu ray. now days you gotta pay monthly for online multiplayer? pc just use my internet. ****s for kids make em happy on Christmas. @ the phone upgrade every year is easier because the carriers just put it on your monthly bill it not like the people went out and dumped $700.

It looks like they want to refresh hardware every 2 years and the games would have backwards compatibility, 1 or 2 generations.
I highly doubt it. The X1 launched in November of 2013, And Project Scorpio isn't set to launch until 2017... that's at least 3.5 years maybe 4. The X1slim isn't really a "new level spec", it has a slight (7% increase) OC on the GPU that is mainly to help with the new HDR content that is being made available for games. I would say that instead of the 8 years we seen between the 360 and the X1 (2005 to 2013) that it will be cut in half. So that would be new hardware every 4 years (maybe 3). If they upgraded the HW every 1 to 2 years that would be impossible for devs. to make games to properly take advantage of a given spec. Plus it would piss of the console-only gamers who love to through hate to the PC Master Race for upgrading so often. I think Spencer knows who XBOX customers are and what they want. I think it's a great idea...

Ah, the "good" old days when console players and devs used to preach the "death of PC gaming etc." around every corner, now we'll have a "death of console(as we know it) gaming"... :giggle2: On a serious note though, it's obvious that the old scheme won't work anymore. We have smartphones/smartvs/pc hardware improving each year, now with VR/4K coming out slowly, but surely... you can't possibly have a console box, that is outdated hardware wise on release day, last more than 2-3 years (just like with a regular GPU cycle on PC for example). And even the term console has/will become obsolete at this point, as it bascialy a rebranded PC with regular hardware updates/refreshes.

Sounds like a way to get people paying for hardware and software, while making the user experience as awkward as it is on a PC. Doubt it will happen, but I never thought a mid gen upgrade was something that would happen either.

Or that because we give an OS away for free everyone will upgrade to it will be a thing.

My console gaming day maybe coming to end, I not gona play upgrade game for consoles

I'm fine with a cyclical cycle. Bump out the lowest generation every other new one. Maintain compatibility=maintain huge backlog of playable games. But without the hassle of PC gaming. Honestly I think that's the right way to go. It probably won't be that often though, look at the GCN and the Original Xbox 1. They both only lasted less than 5 years before being replaced. The 360 overstayed it's welcome. That does create the problem of, what do you do with all the old ones that not many people will want? And, when will you stop with the ****ty mechanical slow RPM HDD bottleneck? (If developers could effectively stream stuff better, they wouldn't have to waste RAM by over caching data into it when they could be using it for other stuff. Also: Stop with the esram nonsense) What's take to get a better CPU? For that matter; Why can't Microsoft learn to make a coherent UI that isn't based around advertising? I can't stand their ****. They took a great UI for the 360 and slowly thrashed it into the gutter, making it worse with each iteration. The first UI change wasn't so bad. But nope to the nope after that. The PS3 XMB only needed some revision and major customization to really make it work perfect. But Sony messed that up too, the PS4 UI is an unbearably cluttered eye sore with pathetic user customization and lack of basic user organization. Nintendo seems to be the only one who gets it right. The Wii U and 3DS UI are basically perfect.

I think what MS needs to do to make upgradeable consoles a success they should start with making the Hard drive upgradeable like Sony rather than relying on an external HDD for games. Do that with Project Scorpio. MS doesn not speak for Sony and Nintendo. If Code name NX is a flop like the Wii-U then MS might be right about no more consoles from Nintendo but if Code Name NX is a success then we might see more consoles from Nintendo. Sony however might have the same thinking mentality as MS though.
