Why is nobody whining that there are no more service packs for Win XP? There should be some Win98 fans as well.
want service pack for winXP/win7? 1) put a bunch of window updates into single execute file. 2) run the file. I didn't even need 3rd step. Now what are those "service packs" again?

Pinning applications on the taskbar is 10x more useful than any 'feature' of Windows 8 and probably the most significant feature Microsoft has added since the start menu. The search was significantly improved over Vista. The network configuration page and networking in general was significantly improved. The automated repair and diagnostics was improved. The general system performance was improved, mostly due to 2D graphics acceleration and whatnot. All the random aero stuff I actually found pretty useful, at least the peak and snap to the sides and stuff. What do I get with Windows 8? A new UI that basically offers nothing in terms of functionality for me but takes upwards of a week to get used to. A ribbon in explorer that basically exposes no new features or anything useful, at least that I have found. A new file transfer system that actually reduced functionality for me. I often copy pictures off multiple camera SD cards to a single folder, now when there is a name conflict I don't have the ability to automatically append a (1) to the file name, just overwrite or skip. Slightly better memory management, which basically means nothing to me. Upgraded graphics system (WDDM 1.2) which also means nothing to me because the difference isn't as noticeable as going from Vista to 7, with the exception of Flash performance being degraded when running a full screen application. I guess a better task manager? There is absolutely not one single Windows 8 feature that has left me impressed. Well, maybe the new sounds of the default theme, they are pretty cool. And honestly I prefer the less chrome in windows and stuff too, I hated Aero for that.
Startup times, and significantly more included drivers, you can plug most printers/stuff in and they work. Logging in with a live account and syncing settings across multiple computers. Plus, you could always pin things, it was called quick launch. My point is, with a few, very minor fixes to how the system works, this can be a significant upgrade. I agree with you, that the file copy system is way better, but a step back in some cases. But if you fix a couple little conflicts, it's significantly better. I think there will be a big patch, or series of patches, following release that improve some of the problems we see.

We are getting SP2 though, we are just having to download it in parts monthly, instead of in one big hit, its just being spread out :P

It makes re-installing the OS a pain in the ass though. I re-installed Windows 7 one month ago after my HDD died and i think i had to reboot like 20 times in the process and run windows update as many times. ok ok i'm exaggerating but not that much. In 2-3 years it's gonna be chaotic without a SP2. Still not upgrading to Windows 8 BTW πŸ˜‰

It's no more of a sidegrade than 7 was for Vista. Hell, honestly, it's probably less of a sidegrade than that. MY only complaint is that they need to merge metro and the desktop more. They just don't work well together. On their own, it's awesome. The new start menu is perfect, the desktop experience is cleaner, but largely unchanged... The only problem is that once you open up a metro app, things start getting weird. If you never do that though, it's not big deal.
MS could solve the issue by giving an option to run metro app encapsulated in a window. This way people could always stay in desktop mode (if they want to) and have metro app pushed in a windows. Kinda like when you run the new skype in Windows 7. It's a Metro UI inside a Windows 7 window. It looks ugly but it's functional and tou stay in the desktop.

If you think that's chaotic try re-installing Windows XP with SP3. There are around 150 updates now. Not that I used it at home or it's used at work any more. Just for tightwads who don't want to pay for Windows 7 and want to re-install XP on a dodge 10 year old TIME PC.

Or you could simply use Win Toolkit and integrate whatever you want in your Win7 iso.

I don't bother with updates, SP1 is enough for me....

I'll give it 3 more years before MS announces EOL for Windows 7. It seems like they want to push Windows 8 on everyone.

Dont really care about sp2 infact i didnt even care about sp1 as everything worked great before sp1.

It does πŸ™‚ Microsoft releases a bunch of hotfix updates usually within a few days after 'patch Tuesday'. These hotfixes are only available by request, they aren't distributed through the Microsoft Download Centre or Windowsupdate (including the manual 'catalog' site)...
I'm not sure you follow (unless I'm not following you..) The original quote was this
Instead, Microsoft will keep updating Windows 7 using patches released each month until support for Windows 7 comes to an end. That date is currently slated for 24 months after the most current SP – that’s SP1, which was released in February 2011 – and would put end of life at January 2020.
24 months after SP1 is 2 years after SP1, when it says support is said to end. It then says it will end 9 years after 2011, in 2020.
Didn't you know 11+2 = 20? :P
I'm worried in case it does lol.

I used XP for 10 years, I can use Win7 for 10 years too.

Great minds and all that πŸ˜€

No need to re-install windows, every so often just make an image of it to another drive, so if anything happens, you can easily just restore it, then grab the updates that came after you made the image, its all i do :P

Guess this means certain fixes will never be officially released, like those hotfixes that say "only install if you are experiencing this problem," e.g. that will never be on winupdate. As for: "Why is nobody whining that there are no more service packs for Win XP? There should be some Win98 fans as well." Well, simple: Win7 (and even Vista) is not officially dead yet. lol

You prolly would care, if you decided to get a new CPU with AVX extension in the future. πŸ€“

Still not going to get windows 8 either. They can go tap themselves.
Very much this.

There will be a solution for Windows 7, Microsoft can sit on their balls and laugh all they want but someone out there will get the job done. Or a proper start menu will be made for Win 8 along with a hack that disables the Metro/Ribbon garbage.
