Aren't they just doubling-down with a new AI? Seems to be MS's way of handling something "if it fails catastrophically, make the same thing with a new engine and give it a different name". Some examples that come to mind are Edge and Clippy (Bob being the original).

Cortana was inspired by Apple's Siri. MS have a habit of copying what other successful companies do and think that it will work for them. MS Store is another terrible example copied from Apples macOs store. Originality was never something MS were good at.

Siri was successful because of 2 main reasons: 1. It was primarily speech-to-speech, which worked particularly well on a device that was clumsy to use (people weren't so used to touchscreens at the time, and iPhones were much smaller back then). 2. It was a novelty to have a talking computer with a personality. When Cortana was made, it was on a device that was already much easier and familiar to use, it took up a large chunk of the start menu (and a lot of people are too ignorant/lazy to know how to remove it), and was not only added long after the novelty died off but was also just such an obvious copycat.

They have already said they will put ChatGPT deeper into the OS... it replaces Cortana. Not that hard of a detective story here.

They could have simply used Cortana 2.0 as the name for the new Copilots. They are trying to solve the exact same problem anyway. Both are personal assistants.

The only thing I ever asked Cortana is how to uninstall it.
