They always made interesting stuff. But even Adreno GPUs are more relevant to general PC use, even without having regular PCIe cards. That's due to DX support. Adreno is just one step to invading PC market and that's taking their GPU and using High performance library for making chip production design. And mali GPUs are not far behind in DX support. Maybe their designs would not be competitive on desktops, but tablets/netbooks/notebooks are close enough in TDP they are already proving their worth in.

I had G200-based board back in the day, with passive cooling and even an option for VRAM upgrade via SODIMM. It was rather unfortunate that Matrox wasted so much time delivering decent OpenCL ICD drivers in a critical period, where a lot of top-tier games used Quake engine for that API.

I am simple man, I see new GPU, I ask if it can Crysis?

This is a 20 year old GPU, so no.

I had one of these in a dual Pentium Pro machine. Ahh the good ol days. The P Pros were very fast for the day. It's a shame Matrox didn't make it into the next century with Nvidia and AMD(ATI).

The real benchmark now is Chrome. We've got a couple machines with a Matrox GPU, perfect for signage.

I remember Matrox. They were one of the top dogs when it came to GPUs back in the day along with 3dfx etc.

Pfft, relevance my rear end. These chip is just way to old and Matrox has forgotten completely what innovation means. I had a G200 waaaaaaaaay back when if you wanted real performance in your PC you stuck in a G200 and Voodoo 3dfx cards in your computer. 3dfx disappeared, ATI and Nvidia stuck it out. Matrox just got stuck. (ring) pick up the phone Matrox it's the 1990's calling. They want their chip back.

Why all this hostility towards an industry innovator - albeit an out-of-date one. Matrox was a graphics leader back in the day. They are celebrating the 20th anniversary of that. You still celebrate your birthday, don't you?

They shifted gears, they're the leading entity for digital signage and multi monitor setups and displays.

That's true, but I am not sure for how long. Take multistream DP where you connect multiple screens over one DP. And how quickly DP progresses with bandwidth to allow 4k@120Hz and higher resolution screens. Card with 3x DP in nothing special today. One with 4x DP 1.3 and you hook (@60Hz): 2x 4K per DP => 8x 4K or 8x 1080p per DP => 32x 1080p And since DP supports both HUB and Daisy-Chaining (and combination of both), you need just 4 DP cables from GPU and then chain monitors. (Easier Installation.) Technology is here, and only thing which prevents its wide spread usage is limited number of screen supporting it.

I'm pretty sure Adreno is AMD tech. Not sure of the exact relationship but it's why Adreno is an anagram for Radeon.

Used to be. But it was sold so long ago, that AMD does not deserve credit for technologies in Adreno. Qualcomm deserves credit today.
