Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't a footprint the horizontal profile of a case? Relatively speaking, that's not small at all--I'm sure you can argue semantics and specs, but I would think conventional towers would have smaller footprints that cases with horizontal motherboard orientations.

Yeah. however you define it, it looks kinda big from the top, using quite a lot of desk/floor area. Slim cases use way less space, eg. this one: http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=533&area=en Even regular tower should look compact compared to this, especially as the shortest of dimensions is kinda big (http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/pc-v33/ - WxHxD are 33x35x39 cm) Are components and filters easily accessible? Yes! Is it compact? Hell no!
