Why would anyone want to replace a ddr5 CPU before ddr6 arrives, let alone in a year ? Get a z690 for 200eur, 12700k will drop under 300 soon, get a 6000 c32 hynix kit and OC past 7000 and youre fine for years. Same as people who got an 8700k with fast ddr4 have been fine for a long time up until recently when 6/12 started to show too high usage and they have many options of getting an 8 core with ddr5 now. Longevity means getting something that you wont have to replace.
It will be 2 years or more before 6/12 becomes an issue. Until then i will replace my 7600x for a proper 8core with v-cache. There was no point for me buying a 7700x now at these prices.

Not what you claimed when playing Spiderman.

I was claiming my gpu usage drops in spiderman when i start swinging around due cpu bottleneck on 3800x. But you are right cpu usage can be very high even with 8cores when you use rt, around 80% highest i've seen but mostly at 50-60%.

Yeah 8 cores is the way to go really if you want smooth frametimes and good efficiency. I wonder if 7800x3d will be worth the extra 150eur over 12700kf after the upcoming alder lake discoutns. Its older but has ecores that help with efficiency, multi tasking and also an imc that will do around 8000mhz OC on current hynix sticks.

they were worse than 10th gen really. that said, I'm still perusing used offers for a 11400/11700 that someone would like to dump quickly, seen used 11900 around 215eur already but did not want an i9.
So untrue. The IMC on the 11th gen was soo much better and ipc was a pretty big uptic. I was going to go 10900k as a side upgrade to my 9900k because 10 cores. After reading how good they (11th gen) could overclock under water i decided to try it out. Glad I did. Really what made my decision was the pcie4.0 for nvme drives and the imc. Was finally able to get my memory latency to go under 40ns. Huge plus for me. I think my next upgrade though will be 14th gen.

Lol a few ns wont make a difference especially when you have to sacrifice bandwidth because of imc frequency hit in gear2. That's more make believe if you think under 40ns is some sort of magical latency. And with added power draw and price of Rocket lake it was an utterly pointless launch. Pcie4 bandwidth doesnt matter at all for nvmes, games rely on small size (kB) random r/w not big size (mb) sequential. A newer pcie3 drive based on better nand and controller will outperform a pcie4 one in loading times.

actually true re: pcie plus DS has been revealed to be a 2 edged sword

i'm glad to see others were as critical of Rocket Lake as i've been. i'm seriously liking Raptor Lake more than i ever expected and the only thing stopping me right now from buying an i-5 13600k/ B760 is the knowledge that Meteor Lake is around the corner and there is no upgrade. but if i was rocking a 12xxx Intel it's a nice move, but not necessary.

DS ? anyway, rocket was pointless because of power and price mainly, price to perf was the same as 10th gen and power was worse at the same time. with boost active it needed 60W more than 10900K while performance was the same https://imgur.com/a/3BCuP4z

yup. DS results showed only 3 seconds, which were mainly just down to the nand/ controller quality of the latest 990Pro vs old adata 8200.

When 11th gen launched the 10th i9 gen was a better purchase in my book than the 11th gen i9.

absolutely. I was waiting for z490/s1200 cpus cause they were finally going to make i5 6/12 and i7 8/16, when even 8c/8t 9700 was already great for gaming. Once they did I pulled the trigger, I like buying hardware (cpu and ram) late into its cycle when it's known to be stable,hassle-free and price is way down. rocket and z590 added nothing substantial really, which was a little disappointing cause I thought it was going to be at least some upgrade while for perf/price and especially perf/power it was a downgrade.

Still "gaming IPC" is nice with dual rank b-die. In some other forum, my 11400F beat >5GHz 8700Ks (also RAM >4000) in e.g. Far Cry 6 or Oblivion with mods. Ofc not by a substantial margin, but definitely noteworthy for just 4.2/4.4GHz and way less RAM clocks. Of course you won't find such interesting tests anywhere in articles on testing websites. Btw. for the lulz. Hitman 3 Sapienza 13700K DDR5 7200 CL34: https://abload.de/thumb/hitman3_2023_02_09_17z1cus.png 206fps 5800X3D is 136fps. 11400F 133fps. 😀 All tested on my own hardware or that of a relative with maxed out RAM. Though rBAR wrecks performance on Intel (used to be fixed on ADL, probably a common bios bug...), but we can live well without it on Nvidia.

Actually those few NS do help alot for .1% frame times in games. my 3866 g1 vs 4200 g2 bandwidth is better with the g1. Going for 4200G2 at 46ns to 3866G1 at 37ns i am seeing about a ~10% increase in those .1% and especially .01% min frame rates. Now I agree the cpu is prob not a good upgrade from an 9900k if you keep it stock. Like i said it was a small upgrade so i could play with overclocking my ram more. With the side benefits of pcie4. Im still waiting for ddr5 prices to come down a bit more and for speeds to get better, also to see what they are going to do with 14th gen, if its just a revision of 13th or if it is actually the new meteor lake process. on a side note if your a competitive gamer playing warzone, pubg, apex and alike. Getting lower latency and higher frame rates does help when your sniping someone. Getting that shot in just a ms faster is a must.

good points but i have to remind folks that DDR 5 scaling is awful. you aren't going to get that expected speed advantage in gameplay. HH did a great job a couple of weeks ago on this point. RL advantage of DDR 5 6800 vs 6000 is almost nil despite the massive cost increase.

And it has the power consumption to back that up. I'd gladly lose a few FPS off the top end to reduce my power consumption by 100W. Intel fans are just as delusional once you account for the cost of that "proper RAM", and a proper cooler. I never understood the desire to have "the best ,with asterisks" when: A. Whatever advantage it has is small enough where the asterisks do not justify themselves. When it comes to a CPU pushed to the upper echelon, it either offers more performance than you display can render, is held back by poorly-optimized software, is idly waiting for other hardware to catch up, down-throttles its performance to "lesser" PCs due to heat, and/or is obnoxiously loud to maintain temperature. Wow, what a great deal! B. You are just one of thousands with a similar configuration, so, why bother when there's no practical benefit and just simply isn't special? If you actually had the best with no asterisks, and you're maybe one of hundreds (or even dozens) with a similar configuration, that is something special. Though even then - you're only getting 5 minutes of fame and then everyone moves on. Just look at how little people care about world record overclocks. C. The fact there are asterisks means it just simply isn't the best - even if you don't care about things like value or power consumption, what's the point if it still isn't #1 in every performance test? All that being said, this is why I've heavily considered a 13400, because there's no meaningful loss in performance compared to a 13600K yet the power draw difference (and therefore noise difference) is huge.
Well, it's all how you use the CPU. Most the time I'm using 40-120 watts. 4 games a i5 is where it is at for price to performance. To note I didn't pay $600 for a 11900kf. I got that with a z590 and water block for around $500. A 12700k is $230 right now. As for power consumption you undervolted the GPU as well and why would you be running max OC on CPU for gaming anyways?

What's the point of getting that CPU then? The CPU isn't a bottleneck, in which case, you can save yourself a big chunk of change by getting a "slower" product. Of course, in your case you might not have saved as much, but that's more of an anecdote than what is to be expected.

The point is to not be bottle-necked by the CPU. Though I wouldn't buy RKL anymore at this point, it's outdated. Same goes for Zen 3. Saving money doesn't fix that.
