Gotta pay for them cores.

2990WX here costs 1940€ average. I'm not going to buy one, but I'd have 14 more cores for almost the same price wile not have my house burnt down please!

I'm not sure what Intel is trying to prove here other than following their distinctly stupid policy of trying to pretend there is no competition. I've said this before, it's a competent strategy when you don't actually have any competition, but when your competitor has a CPU with almost double the cores for a similar price, I'm not sure it's the most prudent course of action. I mean, the reality is that while this is not the type of chip that everyone runs out and buys, I'm sure even the most ardent Intel supporters are considering their options at this point. Actually, these things are distinctly unimpressive and also totally unnecessary as it seems to be nothing more than a glorified 7980XE. MOD: Video removed, this is a discussion forum.

I think you underestimate people's loyalty to a brand. When Intel releases something like this, people are in fact convinced it is the best. As stupid as that policy may be, it is in fact working.

Add in a lot of "lobby" / "seduced managers" at every big firm and some state (gubernamental) dependencies.

At these "enthusiast" price ranges, value for money considerations go out the window. People just want the best, and this chip will offer the best single-thread performance in its category. I'm sure there are plenty of people looking to upgrade their 7980XE to this new chip so that they can have the best.

I'm very happy with my 7980xe @ 4700mhz, 4000 c17 memory πŸ™‚ Fast on every task, even gaming. 32 core AMD is usless in other tasks than pure "rendering". The prize is stupid, but there is no competition on "full package" cpu like 9980x/7980xe. Very fast on everything works for me. PS: I using AMD 1950x on my server. Testing 9900K @ 5,3ghz with one 2080ti. Totally crazy fast in gaming. HT off in BF V πŸ˜› I don't care about fps/$ or CB 15 points per $. I just want fast on everything. That's why I'm using Optane 900p for OS and programs too.

Thanks for solidifying my point so well. Despite the fact that the 7980XE does not actually outperform the 2990WX in every test, one could argue it isn't "very fast on everything" and there is in fact real competition. It's also crucial to keep in mind that your priorities aren't everyone's. Clearly, things like price, wattage, Linux performance, and number of PCIe lanes aren't important to you (which is perfectly fine, I'm not ridiculing) but what you deem a complete package is not shared among everyone. Furthermore, you're acting like somehow owning the 9900K has anything to do with your performance in BF5. Since you admitted to disabling HT, you could have just bought the 9700K, save yourself $125, and get identical results. So again - you are solid proof that you buy Intel for the sake of Intel and the status you think comes with the name. That's fine, you do you, but you're a solid an example of what BangTail doesn't understand.

I agree with you but I think that will only take them so far. I have opted for Intel up until now but my next workstation box is a 2990WX (just have to build it). People pay more to have the best performance, Intel is not the best choice right now in that regard (for high core count CPUs) so that is the point where I am not going to pay their premium anymore. I paid a premium for the 2080 Ti because it is the best performing GPU but I am not going to pay that same premium for something that does not perform at the highest level. And I understand brand loyalty all too well, one need only spend some time in this section of the forum to see it in full effect on a daily basis, so please spare me the condescension about 'what I don't understand'.

I'm sorry - it actually wasn't meant to be condescending.

But then he wouldn't have "the best" πŸ˜‰ He paid the price premium to have the best, regardless of performance or value per dollar, which is very typical for such consumers. Just look at the thousands of Apple sheeple who line up every year to buy the latest iPhone - they don't need it and it's certainly not good value for money... but it's the best! To such people, that's all the justification needed. No amount of rational, value-oriented arguments will convince them otherwise.

IMO, Intel does this because of marketing purposes, almost entirely. It's Intel's version of trying to "keep up with the Jones's", at least for appearances sake, more or less. Especially it's true when yields are abysmal...they know they may sell a few to diehard loyalists, or they may sell not a single one--but they really don't care that much these days as to how many of these things they sell--it's sort of marketing place-holder for Intel. Intel looks for volume production for the chips it is actually motivated to sell. Intel has become a highly diversified company, unlike AMD, which is still keenly if not 100% focused on its CPU/GPU tech and product production. Management inside the two companies could not be more different in terms of focus and products. Differences are really showing these days, imo.

This is why I always liked GURU3d website, just honest reviews and the commenters here seem to have COMMONSENSE and some comments display how people "sheep" are (in real day to day life) and image seems to be important and the Jones affect with how most people want the best of the best and also make others jealous. Back to the point, I hope INTEL fans don't see INTEL as the only CPU in the world to play games. This section you can easily spot fanboys or snub show offs........ and good for them for buying some over priced CPU so be it to help their self confidence or lacking something in a different department.

Why don't you buy FX-8300? For that price you can buy 120 FX cores.

GamerNexus already tested them, so u can check this CPU oc performance

"32 core AMD is usless in other tasks than pure "rendering". Come on man. Stop spreading the farking BS. Not everyone buying these massive CPU's uses Windows & it's god-awful NUMA support. In Linux, the 2990WX is an absolute monster and generally makes the i9-7980XE look like the puny CPU it is by comparison. And hell, even in Windows it comes out with the win, or at least similar performance WAY more often than you are giving it credit for. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd-linux-2990wx&num=1 "While the Threadripper 2990WX may seem like a lot -- and it is -- it's actually with great value as shown by our performance-per-dollar results. For 32-cores / 64-threads at $1799 USD, consumers are getting a lot of performance potential and right now it blows the Core i9 7980XE out of the water in not only raw performance and performance-per-dollar. Intel will definitely need to respond before potentially losing much market-share in the HEDT space. The Threadripper 2990WX has also proven to be very competitive in performance-per-Watt to round out this offering."

As much as I enjoy badmouthing Intel, I don't blame people who buy Intel CPUs. It's their money to use however they wish to use it. Of course some people would buy them due to ignorance, still thinking there's no realistic alternative, but those people don't dwell here at Guru3D. Guru3D regulars know what they are doing, whether they buy AMD or Intel. They have their reasons, and those reasons are no worse than another person's. I may call RTX 2080 Ti ridiculously expensive, but some people here make so much money that for them buying one would be the same as another person of lesser means buying RX 560, so there's nothing strange about getting one or three. It's all relative. That's life.
