No, took intel 3 months and a lot of persuasion from competition.
If intel felt the pressure, such CPUs would be here 3~4 years ago on when technology allowed it.

This. Ive recently built a workstation with Ryzen 1800x for work, and it works fantastically, for such a price.
I want to wait for Ryzen 1700 Pro, see if they are any different from standard in terms of OC/ Price potential, and build a home PC with ryzen 1700.
Unless Intel changes their policy, AMD is the way to go.

Nice. The AMD path has its advantages though. Like longer socket support and lower overall prices for both the CPUs and their motherboards. Interesting to see the performance of the new i5 and i7 against Ryzen 1600 and 1700. Interesting year.

I wouldn't be so sure about this as the 7700K only boosts a single core up to 4500 MHz.

Unless set to do otherwise in the BIOS. My i7 7700k runs at 4.5GHz on all four cores at all times. Yes technically an "overclock" but its actually MSI's "Enhanced Turbo Boost" feature. No other adjustments like with regular OC'ing are required, just set it to Enabled, easy peasy.
What I'm finding strange is that Intel would have two products so close in spec/performance (i7 8700k vs i7 7800K) released so close together. Seems strange and counterintuitive to a solid business model. One will cannibalized sales of the other. I realize the difference in the chipset but still those boards for X99 are pricey. I have a feeling that the i7 8700k may appeal to more people than they think and the 7800k not so much

meh, 7820X has crappy mesh with lower overall gaming perf, and this 6 core is not enough to make me move..
2019 can't come soon enough with IceLake x86 refresh and Zen2+.

The number of useless processors on X299 increased from 2 to 3! (if you consider their 8+ cores worth buying).

I don't see any problem here.
In the past there was a similar situation. In 2013 Quad core mainstream Haswell / Ivy Bridge 3770K/4770K and later this year also Quad core HEDT Ivy Bridge-E 4820K for LGA2011.

It seems that indeed Intel is bringing 6 cores in both i5 and i7-x700 segment. No HT in i5 though, typical Intel. But $339 6/12 core sounds great.
check out techspot latest cpu review. 1600 similar to 7800x, 7700k decently faster, and in not so small number of cases it absolutely destroys the before mentioned duo. Especially 1% frames. wth...

If they brought out a 6 core CPU that ran at 4ghz then i'd buy it. But since they don't have that then there's very little reason for me to upgrade from my current CPU.
