I did get 30€ win8 licence when it was on sale at release. Other than that I havent even needed to pay to get "genuine" codes to my pc`s.

Does the free upgrade option mean you must have windows 8 installed first? I always hated not being able to do a full reformat as I always have problems with upgrades. I usually just end up buying an OEM version so I can reformat whenever I please.

AFAIK as long u have the "serial keys" you can fresh install there is different between retail and oem OEM : usually embed keys to hardware, SLIC BIOS / UEFI, so it stick to your hardware (mobo)... so the keys can't transfered to another system Retail : is real "serial keys" where, like say you moving to new PC, you can format old PC and use the serial keys on new PC thats why Retail installer price is way higher anyway regarding windows, i think except PC builder, most user nowdays wont matter much, because most of them buying pre-builded PC that come with windows preinstalled (OEM)

I still of the opinion if they made keys 50$ which will work on 1 machine, that easily de-activated and transferred to new machine, more people that make there own machine would be willing to buy the OS then find other ways. 90+ dollars for oem keys that arnt transferable is tad much imo

I had an OEM Win7 on my previous machine. I built a new machine, taking only the video card and optical drive from the old one. Win7 activated immediately and automatically on the new PC, no questions asked. Office 2010, however, dared to suggest something had changed and made me make the most infuriating phone call to the MS robot, but after that it activated as well. All in all, I can't say MS would have let me down in that sense.

Even if you have OEM Win7/8 and you'll change PC, activation is not a Big problem -> call to Support and it's done 100% You'll have Win8 machine licensed on new PC ! Sometimes people don't wanna call or something, they use Valid Win Key + KMS activation ! That's Idea I have always Genuine Win -> since WinXP And now they give me free Win10 -> thats cool ! :banana:

Will there be a default key for 10 so we can fresh install, then put our legit key in to activate it like we can currently with 7>8?

If there are more 7 billion people world wide even at small number like 100,000,000 million people that they sold a full ver copy at $25/35 a pop that still will over 2 billon and doesn't count oem or corp office and there other app. There just try milk the cow way to dry and if that happy then there going be SOL be for long as people will make there way to other OS.

Minus whatever it costs MS to create, ship, market..etc the OS. I read that Vista cost them $10 billion to make. I'm sure Win 10 probably won't cost them as much but there is a lot of risk still when you have to win people over to a new OS despite the fact that many of those users won't have a use for any new features. Many people just use their web browsers and maybe a few 3rd party apps like Netflix so they could probably do fine with any OS that comes with their tablet/laptop. Probably won't matter if it's $20 or $80 to those people. System builders will buy regardless if they have to.
