You make the footprint smaller but you increase the footprint of the silicon required to decode it.

Sure but the silicon travel from the factory to your house ONCE, while the data travel every day. I'm skeptical about same identical quality, probably on some particular test video. I can understand how going up on 8k, on normal video content there is space for a lot of optimization, but i can't believe you can get to 1080p half size and same quality.

How are "same quality" defined? In my view contets transition into more plasticy look for every generation of compression and "intelligent" image enhancements. Espescialy annoying for fine details like grass, trees, skin, fur, hair, textiles and dirt. Mad Max wont be the same with plastic treatment.

I am still waiting for decent HEVC encoder for high-quality BD rips that doesn't take ages.. Post AVC codecs improvements looks like in real life only for low-quality content due bad encoders. Yes, yes HEVC is a must for proper HDR content, but encoders are still terrible for HQ rips and speed...

as soon as your encoder speed goes double the video fps, they manage to bring it down to half again lol they must love slow encoding (joking) good news I guess for bandwith, not so for nature as my H.265 encoding experiences meant having a nuclear power plant at home 😱

This will annoy Oppo 205 owners if the processor isnt powerful enough to decode H266, or if Oppo stopped releasing updates. I wonder if any company will release a high end audiophile H266 BD player.

I hope someone, once again, donates a license to Firefox for decoding. Assuming sites start using the new format. I just hope it won't make dark scenes in videos even worse than they already are.

Most media is still on 264 for fast compression and transcoding, but the sizes for good quality files are barely bearable at 1080p. I've recently started to look to replace my library with 265 encodes, and I must say: It's amazing to be able to get more quality for less size. In some cases I went from 720p 10Gb movies to 1080p 2Gb ones with noticeable better quality. Others I just downloaded the 4K because it wasn't much bigger over the 1080p. It will take some time to adopt 266 like 265 is still being adopted, but it's a life saver in this new streaming age!

I always cringe when it is stated that the quality is not the same but perceptually the same. Perceived by whom or what? As far as disc players are concerned, think there is only two manufacturers left, Sony and forgot who else.

Make the encoding so slow that you have to wait a week for the new episode of . Only those with super computers can do it in a reasonable time.

You realize that encoding speed for stuff that is not market related no one cares about? Hi quality bdrip are a non concern for technology, nor in speed nor in size. you can have a perfect bdrip dumping the disc in a 50gb file.

HEVC/265 isn't widely adopted yet because of the licensing fees and different major players compared to AVC/264. Seeing the similar politicking with patent pools for VVC/266 i doubt it will go anywhere; like 265 it'll be a decade before we see anything after it's release. Creating the market place today for VP9 eventually AV1 which like today with VP9 is not risk free becuase google hasn't been publicly challenged on patents yet by mpeg-la.

I always thought about this. Back in the day i was barely able to edit 720p, now I'm barely able to edit prores in 4k. Its like they always try to reset what was accomplished. Almost like nvidia's RTX. We barely reached 4k 60 and now we're down to fake 1080p at 60.. I appreciate the evolution but cmon let us have the cake n eat it too.

It's not the video codecs fault that there is more silicone in your porn. Seriously if you download the same Bluray rip in H264 vs H265 there really isn't any appreciable quality difference and the files are smaller.

AVC encoders aren't so fast too. Yes, they comes now with decent multithread support and also with quality degradation, so using a high number of threads will results in lower quality. Last time I checked I didn't see a better multithread support on HEVC encoders (both speed and quality).

High quality BD-rip: DRF < 24 for animation, < 18 for movies. HEVC encoders takes ages for that.

they should also standardize that if lets say you lower 1080p's bitrate below a certain point you can no longer call it 1080p, youtube has made quite the mess with that
