I had to buy a new gaming computer to get my ASUS Rog Strix 3080 OC, the only card I really wanted. But my last gaming computer was 7 years old so it was due to be replaced. This whole availability situation is shocking & really discouraging for gamers. With miners & scalpers, prices have become obscene, I won't be upgrading for many years as I don't see how things are going to improve.

In a fantasy world where msrp prices would actually be a thing, for 1100$, one might as well go with the 3090. It's clear that nvidia will never make the same "mistake" they did with the 1080Ti, that card will go in legend status price/performance wise. But anyway, back to the real world - I doubt I'll see this card below 2500-3000 euros here (and that's optimistic, most likely above 3000 andd very, very limited)... so whatever.

I was expecting it to be priced the same as the 6900XT at the very most. Wow, not only is this MSRP too expensive, but the inflated scalper prices are going give people heart attacks!

In the past, 9 months after a GPU release we would be talking about it's upcoming replacement. Now we're talking about a Ti which is the same CPU architecture. On the good side, my 3090 will be top of the line for that much longer.

The $699 for the 3080 is a joke in itself, by the time the scalpers sell the ti you can add another 1500 on the price or go on an endless pre-order list only to be told your order is canceled due to a product refresh or the next gen is being released, just glad i got my Msi 3070 gaming Xtrio for msrp when i did.

I'd say the 3070 is the sweet spot for gaming, 3080 for high refresh /high res, 3090 total beast mode. The 3080ti would be nice tho waw!

after this news I checked if there were any 3080 available in my country, I check daily and never saw one in stock until this week...ok...yes...today you can buy one, a PALIT GeForce RTX 3080 GameRock, 10GB GDDR6X, PCI-Express (NED3080U19IA-1020G) but it's 2621$/2175€ at a retailer...not an ebay scalper 😱 about the watts, just like I was forced to upgrade when I built a threadripper begin 2020 you will have to give up regular cheap air cooling and go with AIO or liquid cooling, your case will become an oven and be very noisy otherwise
in my country MSI GeForce RTX 3090, 24GB GDDR6X, SUPRIM X KFA2 GeForce RTX 3090, 24GB GDDR6X, 3199,00 € and Zotac GeForce RTX 3080, 10GB GDDR6X, AMP Holo 2499,00 € at a retailer 🙂

If the actual specs on the 3080ti are those listed in this article; I would rather have a 3090. In a earlier article here on Guru3D, the specs were much higher (at the time it was of course speculation). I believe it was supposed to have 20 GB VRAM, and I think the same memory band width as the 3090. Unfortunately, considering the massively high pricing on the 3090; I cannot begin to justify purchasing one of them. It is more than slightly amazing to me that I cannot purchase the 30 series graphics card of my choice! When I bought the 2080ti, there was a few waves of price gouging due to product availability, but not anywhere near this level.

If mining doesn't stop I don't see this situation improving, regardless of any increase in supply. Miners don't have limits to how many they will buy, so any supply increase will simply be bought up instantly. Nvidia would have to release an absolutely insane amount of cards to meet demand, like 5 million 3080Ti cards on launch day and more on the way soon after. There are mining customers that literally buy thousands of GPUs all at once if they can. One customer placed a single order for $30 million worth of mining GPUs. It's hopeless for gamers.

Yeah, if you're merely a gamer and don't use online shopping / in-stock-checking bots (most of the people doing that are scalpers, not gamers) and just "want a new graphics card" like everyone, then this product, the RTX 30xx series, simply does not exist. All the 'normal' seller web sites (Newegg, B&H Photo, BestBuy, etc) have them listed Out of Stock. All the models, too, not just the '70 or '80; but all of them. Yet, obviously, if you go on eBay, you'll find them, but even worse you'll also occasionally find pictures with a large cardboard box opened at the top that contains anywhere between 5 to 15 stacked boxes of 3060s, 70s and 80s. Some scalpers don't just buy a couple of units here and there to make an 'extra buck' out of this messy situation... oh no... they buy in bulk. So, indeed, any "increase in supply" will be nearly nullified by the fact that 1) It works (reselling, in general), 2) It's not illegal, and 3) There's no "easy" solution to fix this. The people who believe that "after the pandemic" things will get back to normal are gravely mistaken. One of my local electronics / PC components store can't actually take pre-orders until an estimated six months from now all the way into Fall of this year; and that's a very optimistic scenario (as the clerk put it).

I wouldn't be surprised if bulk scalpers were in fact distributors making extra change on the side. Either way, I'm sitting this and any future generation out until the situation improves. I can afford these cards even at these stupid prices, but I simply cannot justify this kind of expense for high end gaming alone, and I refuse to support this nonsense.

Wake me up next year!

Moonbogg:

We won't have a chance to get one, ever. How depressing.

What is gddrbg6?

So, that's 2200 basically in a real world scenario.

That is a six months wait for half the memory, less performance and more money than a 3090. Both companies should push existing products as much as they can not releasing new ones.

Yet another phoney launch for a non existent card at an unaffordable price. Hoping a decent Chinese card maker enters the market and pushes the crooks from NVidia out of business.
data/avatar/default/avatar28.webp
It is wishful thinking...but I'd love nothing more than to see Nvidia flood the market with these and folks clammour towards them. Maybe then, the interest would wane for that 6800XT and I could finally buy one. That card has been in extremely short supply and when it does show up, it is even more expensive than the RTX3080. Not sure why that is. By all accounts, the 3080 is supposed to be the higher performing of the two.
