Interesting article/review ruined by this : Core i7 965 Extreme @ 3750 MHz
You should have used a Core2(or 2008 spec CPU).
There is no one with a core i7 extreme and a 9800gt....it is much more likely they have a Q6600 or E8500. Now that would have been interesting to see how much of a boost they get and how much the Old CPU bottle necks the modern GPU.
I say do the review again...properly 🙂

Thinking about it, this is actually really bad false advertising for nvidia that could fool many people who aren't savvy enough to realise they wont get near that boost with the old CPU they actually have. To me, it's as bad as re-branding old generation GPUs to fool customers not "in the know".

Why would you benchmark a card that doesn't support DX11 on a DX11 game?
Granted you could run most in DX9 mode (or sometimes DX10) but wouldn't that defeat the purpose? Why would you want to know how your shiny new DX11 card ran a game in DX9?

Thank you Hilbert for doing this apples to apples comparison. It's nigh impossible to find a review from a leading source that compares the older GPUs with current ones. As a system builder, it's very useful for me, since otherwise I have to scour the internet for multiple reviews, generally using different games, to be able to tell a prospective client - this would be XX% better than what you have right now. 🙂

I don't think you understood me correctly, I want DX11 cards to run in DX11 and DX10 to run in DX10 settings
I simply want to see a DX10/10.1 card's performance in DX10/10.1 and compare it to the DX11 card's performance in DX11 in the same game.
True, it's not a "fair" comparison since the DX11 setting often enables other demanding effects not available in DX9/10. It is however more interesting, since we get to see how much better the DX11 card will run than our current DX10/10.1 card AND with the improved graphics.
This benchmark had 2 games running in DX10 vs DX11, which is good, but more is never worse in those cases.

The rumored 650ti sounds like it could be the best bang for buck card ever. Those looking to upgrade on a budget should wait to see the benches.
I heard its gonna be about 100-130 pounds and able to handle even the newest titles on half descent settings.

Well I really hope I can scrape together some cash for a 660 soon. I'm hoping to buy this generation skip the next & upgrade late 2014 when the next gen GDDR comes out.

My card is still doing great despite its age. Games like Deus Ex HR, F1 2012, even Metro2033 and Sleeping Dogs run perfect, not even on low but medium-high settings. I wait another 6 months at least before I upgrade.

Would of been interesting to see you use 2x 9800GT in SLi against just 1 GTX660 and see how much the GTX660 beats it, and if its still worth the upgrade (which is will be but those 300-400% difference would be a lot smaller).

I would love to know your settings and frame rates in games like Metro 2033, and Sleeping Dogs because with your specs I bet your only pulling in 25-40fps in these game at mid-high. I am being generous saying 40fps to be honest.

My son has some of my old bits of hardware including a 250 gts a.k.a 9800 gtx. He also has an old 17" CRT @ 1280x1024. At that res on the old crt he can game on ultra settings in most games with a decent frame rate.

Fun thing is... go back to november 2006 and pick up a GeForce 8800GTX and fast forward to year 2008 and the 8800GTX would still be a champ vs 9800GT (and 9800GTX+).

Hello, I totally agree with you, a lot of games could be maxed out even with all the AA and AF on ultra. There are few games which is overkill for 8800/9800gt if you turn AA and AF on maximum. Therefore:

if you put setting like: 8AA and 16 AF in games like Battlefield 2 and FarCry 2 = game over for 9800GT. and 660 just shines with that 400+ %... 9800 is even not really playable and it looks like 9800 is worthless. Its not true at all!
What I would like to see here: very high or sometimes ultra quality but with 2AA I'm sure you will see 40+ fps in many games. and reaching 50+ in some.
You could leave the review as it is, but add one more test to every game with lover AA. And so we could compare best of both worlds:
Low AA and 9800/660 and High AA and 9800/660. I believe in that case the conclusion would be: 9800 is getting old but still puts some fight with high settings and lover AA up to resolution 1680 If you want AA maxed out or 1920 the upgrade is really worth your while 🙂.
My hardware at the moment: 8800GT OC E8400@3,5. and I'm plaiyng Modern Warfare 3 with max settings @ 1920 and have ~40 fps with only some scenes getting low minimum fps.

It's pretty easy to calculate 😉 I used to have sli 8800gt, after I finished playing CRYSIS with Max settings but no AA. I sold the second. Scaling was pretty good up to 90-100% with many games. So if you multiple the fps times 1,8-1,9. I believe you will have close scores to real performance or simply make it x2 (best case scenario). btw as i mentioned before, lowering AA settings makes REALLY HUGE difference with 8800GT/9800GT.
BTW I had near perfect experience with that sli setup. No drivers issues, good scaling, good fps. Maybe a little micro stutter in crysis and thats all.

I would rather see a amd x2 4200 used as the cpu and then a comparision
of the gpu upgrade - not some way expensive cpu.
