Hi everyone, I'm the creator...and longtime lurker on here. Wanted to give context to what this is. This is a prototype for a game I'm working in my free time as a solo developer. This video was made as an entry to win a Titan RTX. I'm hoping to have the game in early access, late 2020. As a developer I am just getting my hands on ray tracing and its very much in it's early form but I'm just happy its finally part of the conversation for video games. There are still a lot of features not supported (as mentioned in an earlier comment) and some features that are for the time being costly to the frame rate. The thing that is hard to illustrate, is how fast engines like UE4 optimize these features to make this stuff more usable and get it into the hands of players. ...
Thanks for the update Alden. Your video looks terrific. Best of luck with the game. As you can see, there are many skeptics about ray tracing but I am not one of them. I am a total optimist about it but I never thought these days would come. I have messed around with static ray tracing (POV) for over twenty years and I am a big fan of it. These days I am astounded we can get playable framerates in games with ray tracing. I hope you can win the Titan RTX. My work machine has two of them and they are amazing.

Demos and games tend to be overdone - puddles and tiles look more like mirrors resembling deep lakes or sth.

I don't know why you think AMD isn't playing with dedicated RT hardware - the only thing they seem to be doing differently (from the patents) is fetch/store from texture units instead of the dedicated hardware - the collision calcs are still dedicated hardware. I agree that there are few games but more are coming relatively soon. Wolfenstein Youngblood is getting it, the new Doom is getting it, Control and COD. They should have had more games and the ones that are launching without it should have launched with it. DLSS is in a similar state.
I think that question is on how many more transistors each needs over non-RT design. And if that RT HW is bound to other units. I wrote about it before. And differences in approach of both companies. AMD seems more transistor efficient, but is bound to existing HW blocks therefore there is likely going to be some fixed/semi-fixed ratio per TMU. While nVidia can just throw that separate HW at desired count as long as they think that someone will pay for those transistors.

Anyone who says ray tracing doesnt look good or different than no ray tracing, have u seen minecraft? That thing looks so damn good, realistic and impressive. I agree 99% of the games using ray tracing look just like some polishing simulator or barely different to non ray traced but damn when its done right it looks so good.

Can i get the phone number of their maid? Man things are so clean and so shiny. I wish i could get that result in my apartment. Man i can brush all day long with bleach and it will never be that shiny. So jealous.

Ray tracing is outstanding. Honestly is anyone denying that? It has been outstanding since the 90ies. This though is not an outstanding showing of ray tracing (it's not bad and considering who made it it's even awesome great work i wish i could be that good). BFV is not either in my book. If i had a 2080Ti card i would actually turn RTX off in BFV. When used properly with powerful enough hardware ray tracing is great. But if the point is to make everything reflect everything like if has been polished 2 minutes ago with the most powerful wax you can buy then ray tracing can be very detrimental imo (specially if the game takes place in the middle of a battlefield). It remembers me a couple of years ago when everything looked like it was full of Vaseline. I hated it. Last for a year or two.

i wasn't talking about nvdia vs amd. I do think nvidia expected more adoption in one year and users too. The 2080ti is expensive, and while software improve, 2060s is barely usabale in raytracing. I was just stating that the whole state of raytracing after one year is bad.

The thing that is hard to illustrate, is how fast engines like UE4 optimize these features to make this stuff more usable and get it into the hands of players. The video shows last months build. After the latest 4.23 preview build for UE4 came out, I saw a 10 ms speed increase on ray tracing. When I started this demo, ray tracing features had to be tweaked in command lines and now its fully integrated into the post process volumes. The tech is new and I understand everyone's frustrations that there aren't more games using it in spectacular ways but as developers get acclimated to what they can do with it and engineers find ways to optimize it (which they always do) We are going to see some really mind blowing stuff very soon as the tech matures. This is running at 30-40 fps @ 1080p on a 2080 TI It's using Ray Tracing for ambient occlusion, shadows, and reflections. A new build for Diode will be available later this month so please stay tuned to my youtube channel for updates and free download links. Also these demos are all very playable without ray tracing. There is an executable included that will launch the regular game so people without RTX cards can still get down 🙂.
Good luck with the competition!

Primary sense of RT in games, should be that games should look better with less work that standard faking.. for price of new of stronger HW. Know is problem, that maybe few games look better on very high end cards.. These cards now know seems to be mode for some movies or cutscene makers that they dont need some rendering farm for do there stuff or etc least for quick preview of it. When you are now using Raytracking you are working on standard game rendering.. plus there is additional work for few people with RT cards and its not even sure that all of them are using it, because RT flaws. Im not developer, but if would be RT some easily enabled feature, which dont need too much work like lets say Nvidia Hairworks or something, it would be ok, otherwise its dead on arrival until someone will make some amazing RT only game, which will force people to buy cards like first Voodoo. This technology would be perfect for some arcade cabinet to show what will come to pc in few years, but this scene as technology pioneering device is death for very long time.. Now we need to wait if Nvidia will keep this technology in the cards .. and if its performance will grown fast.. because if would make sense on next Geforce xx50 / xx60 enable it, AMD and Intel would need it too.. other it will die very special feature for few games, even less used that Hairworks / Ansel and other stuff.. im not sure about PhysX if finnaly won, because Intel Havok is probably dead and i heard that at least CPU PhysX is integrated in Unity i dunno about Unreal and big inhouse engines.. but to be honest at least from Half Life 2 there was talk about great physics in games and it never happened too.

Yes, many people on these very forums are. They are saying things like it'll die off and will never be fully implemented into games. They truly have no idea what ray tracing is.

This is imo ludicrous to say that. Ray tracing is the future. And the future is bright. I've been waiting 20 years for real time ray tracing. But for now i think it's still a work in progress. If i could afford the 2080Ti i would buy it and i would be excited to try ray tracing in upcoming games. But the premium asked for the 2070 at launch and now for the Super version just doesn't make any sense to me considering they might or might not be powerful enough for ray tracing moving forward. I can wait another 3 years for now i just want a better fps at 2k and i upgrade my gpu every 3 years anyway.

It has been floating around for long time. Performance wise not good. But it is like only example where I can stand behind RT and say that it brings something good and greatly improves visual experience. Which is funny since we talk about voxel game. But I have to say that having some remake of Hexplore could be really something.

I second that. Hell, if only I could get a cleaning lady to do that for a year or to at the price of a 2080TI...
