4GHz on all cores (out of the box) is a great accomplishment and hopefully the pricing is right.

I don't feel it's wasted. It allows Intel to make one processor instead of two. The biggest reason R5's have not shown up in business/enterprise computers is because they require a dGPU which drives up cost of the unit. Remember the bulk of sales comes form business/enterprise not home users or gamers.

How is that GPU crap? It can display 4k. It's not intended for high end photo and video editing. It's not intended for gaming. But it damn sure can display a excel spreadsheet, PDFs, word documents and email. I feel some of you guys have no understanding of the world outside of your own bubble.

And how many of those office workers need six cores? (for typical office workers, a simple dual core would suffice) A CPU with lots of cores is better suited for heavy computing work, but as a professional computer programmer I would gladly take two more cores over an integrated GPU.

Can be used for *light* gaming, too, transcoding (assuming Quickthingy is still a thing), watching 4K on utub. Useful to have, just not for us "power users"...

Elaborate Excel spreadsheets, multiple VM's running. My wife works in the mortgage industry and all of their computers are i7's and still run sluggish in some instances.

I use a Core i7 3770 in my work machine and it's sluggish every day. I would kill to have two or more additional cores in my system, which would be possible if it wasn't for the crappy iGPU.

The crap iGPU (Yes it is really crap) can not just be switched out with 2 ekstra cores, the IGPU generally does not run full power when the CPU runs full power, so therefore they dont eat up the TDP budget at the same time. If you put on 2 more cores you will end op with a Core i7-7820X or something like that and get a TDP of 120-140 because of the ekstra cores. To state that you need a i7 because you have a high load at work is not saying much about the processor speed needed. The Laptop or small desktop i7 processors are barely faster then a full speed i3 in some cases. The i7 name is used for CPU´es with 2-10 cores or more

My haswell based i5 in my work terminal is sluggish as well but considering the programs I use I chalk that up to a 5,400RPM HDD.

The reason for the iGPU is cost. Most oems won't even look at machines with a dGPU for office use. It increases the tco with initial price, lower reliability and increased power.

We used to use HDDs in our machines (horrible times) - finally got SSDs late last year. My machine also used to have only 8 GB of RAM (I was at 95% memory usage all the time) until they finally gave me 8 GB more this year. Even though my company is fairly large they are still stingy with hardware, not spending any more than absolutely necessary. Next year we're supposed to transition to the cloud, and I'm betting they'll also allocate the minimum there as well 😛

I hate the idea of the cloud in business. We use too much web-based programs that are core to my job that if we have a internet outage or an off-site server failure my job comes to a halt. If ain't working I ain't making any money (pure commission based income).

You don't need more cores...you need an SSD and maybe RAM if you use a lot.

It would be nice if we had the option to get the cpu's without the igpu as it is garbage for alot of people and even oems that add a dedicated gpu even the company I work for has i5 desktops with Radeon gpus which doesn't make sense.

The 8700K is a 95W part though, and it has six cores (and an iGPU).

End of quote I am trying to tell you that the iGPU does not really eat much power because its so weak, so if you want to trade the iGPU for cores you may win 5 watt from the missing iGPU and then need 35watts ekstra because of the 2 ekstra cores. In the end you will end up with something close to a CPU you can already buy in stores now. You will not really get a cheaper CPU if the iGPU is removed or defective, because they will just sell it for socket 2066 like they do with the 7700k/7740K right now, its the same CPU with a defective iGPU.
