It won't be... if no-one buys it. Speak with your wallet. (Realises that no-one will do this and they'll be laughing all the way to the bank)

Nothing like some good news to start the day...

This is going to slow down the adoption of DDR5 systems.
Especially if AMD and Intel gives us an option to go with DDR4 or DDR5, on new CPUs.

ddr4 was also 50% more expensive than ddr3.

"Only" 50-60%? Early price listings suggest like 200-300% higher price for DDR5.
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C18 €126.90 on Amazon right now. How much is 32GB of DDR5 RAM? All leaks suggested that it might cost €300-400.

Let's wait to Hilberts and others testing to see what it does compared to DDR4 and also how it scales, the extra price can then be put in context. If it gives a good boost through actual work / gaming then it might be worth the extra outlay. No point getting it just for extra MB/s etc for example in AIDA or such.

With the many little factors good luck INTEL.Will be a rough start for their new architecture. With performance price ratio and including the GPU issue and dummy Biden (Brandon) ruining our economy, lack of jobs, inflation, and gas oddly going up this is going to suck for us Americans. This sucks, going to have to nurse my Ryzen 5 3600 and RX580. This really sucks.

All DDR generations went up in price by a similar amount. As would happen when any new tech arrives before its inventory saturates the market. In a year or so it will be much cheaper.

Newer tech premium, always costs more in the beginning.

They might as well stated that the sky is appearing blue to our eyes .

And here is a good reason to stick with a DDR4 system until prices dropped.
It's not like Zen3 and Intel 11th Gen (except that core i9) are going to be turning trash the minute DDR5 memory will drop.
Chrysalis
reboot of the memory manufacturer collaboration then.

Silver Lining :
the price of DDR5 will have dropped (or be dropping) with the arrival of Zen 4.
regardless of the merits (and drawbacks) of Alder Lake, Intel is big enough by itself to effect economies of scale for products downstream like RAM.
even if enthusiasts treat AL like the placeholder it is there will be enough mass channel sales to effect such a change.
that is unless this is the poorest selling Intel cpu of all time (doubtful).

I talked to someone who was a retailer in the 80-90s he told me memory always had this super expensive->prices go down slowly->when it's cheap something happens either a "shortage" or a better version and plop prices go to the max again
he told me that during a period they sold pre-built computers without memory and customers had to source it themselves, it was so expensive it cost alone the price of everything else
I hope we won't have that this gen O_O

Like anything new, initially supply will be thin and prices will be high.
Over time, the speeds will increase as well as supply. Prices will drop like everything else. Supply and demand.

Safe to say I'm not in the market.
