I've had 920/2720QM/2760QM/3930K/3720QM/3770K/3930K 3930K wins every time.
How may games actually use 6 cores though? I'm hard pressed to think that by changing just the CPU/MOBO then it will make a massive difference to gaming with a pair of 460s, compared to keeping my existing setup and getting a 780. It's the price/performance difference. For example, spend £460 on the 3930K + £330 on an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme (total £790) but keep my 460s and possibly see little improvement in gaming or buy the Gigabyte Windforce 780 for £590 and see much more improvement in gaming and save £200! The above are what I would personally buy if I decide to jump and prices are an example based on a few websites. It's the same with Haswell, ASUS MAXIMUS IV Extreme + 4770K (about £610) and possibly see little improvement or spend £590 on a 780? Seeing as the IB-E aren't available yet I have no idea of price but would assume comparable to Sandy-E. I could upgrade today and buy new mobo/cpu/gpu but can't help feeling my existing system would still be more than adequate with just a new GPU rather than a 2011 + SB-E or IB-E and seeing as IB-E will have little improvement over SB-E, just what is the point of IB-E 🙂

I wouldn't imagine any more than 3-5. I would naturally assume GTA V to possibly utilize 4-6. Your situation is different. Definitely upgrade your video card. 3930K over 3770K/4770K is a luxury upgrade and should only be done when there's money to burn. I also do 3D rendering so I actually do benefit.

If I go with a GPU upgrade I can dedicate a 460 for PhysX and use the other to replace a 7950GT I have in another system so at least I can re-use the 460s. I did say in another thread I wouldn't be upgrading but looking at the raw power of the 780 and now the OC editions it's looking more tempting the more I read, and now new 780s are being announced like the ASUS DirectCU II OC it's time to have real good think! CPU wise it's not worth it, an IB-E would be wasted as I don't game that much so most of the time it would be idle on the desktop, only when the CPU/MOBO dies would it force me to upgrade.

Why dont you just overclock your cpu and see what performance that you get then? Maybe eliminate any bottleneck which will then eliminate the need to upgrade to a new cpu at this present moment in time....?

Any news about overclocking those babies??? Are they supposed to overclock properly or are they going to overclock like Haswell??? I have a strange feeling that Intel is limiting overclocking on their latest cpus so we are forced to buy their most expensive parts... Guess i will find out when they are released...

It's already OC'd to 3.6 from 2.6, anymore wouldn't be worth the increase in power draw for performance gained as per this article over at Toms Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclock-core-i7,2268.html Yep, it's showing it's age but it's still able to cope with most games, and seeing as i'm not one of those people that want EVERY setting on MAX to play a game then cry when it doesn't get a constant 10000000000+ FPS without micro stutter then plopping in a 780 will extend it's life another year methinks!!

Ok fair enough i suppose however powerdraw is a concern but when im overclocking i dont worry about the powerdraw...ever. It has also been proven and stated many times how 3.8 to 4ghz+ eliminates alot of potential Bottleneck from the cpu which allows the gpu's to run as they should at a faster speed. The cpu is definitely worth the extra oc.

Extra cores beyond 4 don't matter much atm in games. I'll defo jump on the bandwagon when 8 cores becomes the new norm though. My friends all laughed at me being the first Q6600 buyer, all of them having a dualcore, OC'ed slightly further then my Q6600. I had the last laugh as eventually multicore became utilized in some games and dualcore barely offered any benefits. IMO, just jump ship at the right time and you can ride out a CPU or other part for quite some time.
